KXAS & KXTX off the air due to technical difficulties, and bad timing too.

on Wednesday afternoon on the day after Christmas, KXAS NBC 5 & KXTX Telemundo 39 was knocked off the air by unknown (at this time) technical difficulties. and to make matters worse, the stations had bad timing as North Texas was during with a severe weather outbreak cause by a cold front approaching the area. the storms of course are happening on the 3rd anniversary of the 2015 Tornado outbreak that hit Garland and Rowlett hard. also this severe weather outbreak caused the 2018 ServePro First Responders Bowl (formerly the Heart of Dallas Bowl) due to nonstop lighting with the game being underway in the 1st quarter with Boston College leading 7-0 against Boise State only for the game to be declared a no contest.

for now, NBC 5 and Telemundo 39 is only seen via the internet on their websites as the continue to fix the issues.

update: both stations have returned to the airwaves after today's "outage" on the feeds on cable, satellite and over the air antenna tv.

Funny the NBC O&O's websites still use (almost obsolete) Flash. Don't have Flash installed on my computers (anymore) with the security issues.

I can watch KPRC's newscasts (along with the rest of the major network stations newscasts) here in Houston, so I believe they (rightfully) deserved the "Best Website in Texas" award back in April. At least I don't have to sign in with my Xfinity account (if it works--I'm an internet-only customer) just to watch the live stream.

Did NBC 5 make their stream free-to-air to compensate for the outages across the live TV spectrum? It's like a trip down memory lane for KHOU/WFAA during Harvey. (But then there were 3 other stations showing the same coverage in both situations. Not much of a difference!)

yes, during the day last Wednesday, NBC 5 had to broadcast live via webstream for free with no sign-in from a paid tv provider's account as the entire free OTA signal was off the air as was the Cable/sat feed of it too, which could had been feed from the sign of either NBC 5's STL at the DFW airport area studios or their broadcast tower in Cedar Hill

Usually, especially in major markets (like DMA #5), the station is fed directly to the cable system through fiber optic lines. More likely there was a technical problem at the studio if the direct link and the STL (fiber optic/microwave) are both down. The satellite providers have a site somewhere in the Metroplex within the 60 dbu contour that has a receiving antenna and a satellite uplink.
