KXAS/NBC5 Leaving Fort Worth?

Well, if they went to CenterPoint they'd still technically be in Fort Worth. And that is the primary city of license in their station ID - "KXAS, Fort Worth/Dallas." If they moved to Irving they'd have to file a CP, since they'd need a new STL for Irving (moving to CenterPoint would simply allow them to move the equipment but not the COL) and they'd have to change their primary COL as well. "KXAS, Irving/Dallas/Fort Worth" just doesn't have the same ring to it.

There might not be enough room at Sundance Square, and besides they'd need room for production studios, offices, and engineering. (WFAA still has main offices at Communications Center, IIRC.) CenterPoint would make more sense, but a remote storefront studio (kind of like WVEC/13 in Norfolk/Hampton Roads, VA) might not be a bad idea.

It's no longer necessary for your main studio to be in your city of license.

See FCC regulation 73.1125:
http://edocket.access.gpo.gov/cfr_2009/octqtr/47cfr73.1125.htm

The regulation requires the main studio be either:

1. In the city-of-license.
2. Within the city-grade coverage contour of any station licensed to the same community.
3. Within 25 miles of the "reference coordinates" of the city-of-license.
4. Anywhere, upon FCC approval if good cause is given.

Locations in Irving would qualify under point 2 above. (maybe point 3 too)

Last night, the Fort Worth City Council approved a $2.5 Million tax abatement to get them to stay in the city. This will allow them to build their new studios at CentrePort.
