KXEG has switched back to Spanish music

This change occured at some point overnight, but I'm not sure when. I thought they would use a similar Spanish AC format that their sister station KNNR Reno, NV uses but now I'm not sure. This was definitely a surprise for sure.

Edit: Listening to the station more, it's pretty clear that they use almost, if not the same format as KNNR "Radio Xtasis". After all, KXEG is now also using the Radio Xtasis branding.

Edit 2: Timewise, I would say this change likely occurred somewhere between 5-8am. I was up at 4am and they were still playing oldies, but I went back to sleep and woke up again around 8:30 to the new format.

They dropped MeTV Music after less than a month in September 2024 due to "technical difficulties." Since then, they've been running a voicetracked oldies format they eventually called "The Time Machine." Approximately one year later, they've come full circle back to "Radio Xtasis."

All business expenses are a “tax write off”. In business, you are only taxed on profits after all expenses.

I believe Mr. Brown's primary business is real estate and charter schools. He would just be able to write off the operating costs of the stations if there is no revenue coming in? If that's not the case, why bother running them.

Aren't radio stations like, really REALLY expensive to run though? If he can do it and this is just some type of passion project for him (which isn't totally unheard of in this industry), then props to him I guess?

This all depends on his corporate structure. If they are all under an umbrella structure, the losses of one division offset the profits of another.
 
Thinking about it now, I wonder if there was some sort of contract or agreement that was set to expire end of August. I'm just speculating here, but I honestly cannot see any other logical reason why a radio station would abruptly abandon one format and audience for a completely opposite format without any sort of warning or notice. Interesting enough, the station is still airing the same English advertisements that they were airing before (albeit, not as often).

With Don Brown, that is an erroneous assumption.
 
I contacted the phone number on the KXEG website and received a call back from Mr. Brown himself within an hour. Turns out the oldies format was an experiment that just didn't work out (not enough listeners and too much competition, shocker) and it looks like the Spanish music is here to stay.

Although they aren't doing oldies on AM/FM radio anymore, they are going to continue the live sports broadcasts in English (CAA Preps if I remember correctly). I have more information about what's to come, but nothing else is official yet so I don't want to publicize anything more I was told.

I remain unconvinced about the "here to stay". It's already been pointed out that the market has been oversaturated already with Latino-focused stations.

Those were Mr. Brown's words. Now whether or not he keeps to those is another question. His reasoning for switching back to the Xtasis format was because it blew up in Reno after they started adding a mix of Regional Mexican and pop music. I guess he's banking on the same thing happening here. Only time will tell on this one.
