KXII Goes Digital

KXII, which serves Sherman and the Lake Texoma area, switched off their analog transmitter for good at the end of Friday, Feb. 6.

Their digital signal is currently on UHF channel 20, but they are planning to move back to their original VHF channel (12) by the original DTV transition deadline of Feb. 17.

Good. That's what they should all do. Follow through with the original plan. Putting it off 4 more months and $650 mil of DTV Aid later there will still be plenty of people not prepared in June, so will they postpone it again for those folks? Some people will always put off today what they can do tomorrow no matter what.

Now here in Northern Wise, Texas we will receive the new signal with KXII's new antenna orientation near Lone Grove, OK which was hit hard by the F-5 that just hit there.

KXII has completed the transition and moved their digital signal back to channel 12. As a result I can now get it all the way down here in Garland. It's weak, and often pixellates and fades out during the daytime, but it's usually pretty watchable at night.

Anyone have a clue how they manage to fit two HD broadcasts and one SD broadcast onto a single carrier? I didn't think there was enough bandwidth to make that possible.

There isn't. I imagine watching it on a large screen would quickly show motion artifacts.

As of 5:55 A.M. this morning, I am not able to view KXII-DT 12 in Plano. I used to pick up KXII-TV and KXII-DT clearly. Is the station late in getting on the air this morning, or am I now out of range of the new transmitter?

Very simple: DTV works better on UHF than VHF. If you have an outdoor antenna pointing north, you might be able to get KXII-DT on channel 12. If it's an indoor antenna, probably not. I can't get channel 8's DTV signal with rabbit ears, but I can get every other full power DTV station in the DFW area.

I read somewhere that DTV reception is more dificult when there is an adjacent full power analog signal. That could explain the issues I've heard with with 3, 9 and 12. It will be interesting to see if things change once all the analogs are gone.

Last Friday, Feb. 20, there was a "crawl" at http://www.kxii.com/home/headlines/39180352.html saying they were operating at reduced power (again) for further equipment upgrades. The crawl seems to be gone now, though.

Up here about 2 miles SW of Decatur, we still can't get KXII-DT and we have our antenna facing towards DFW, is this a problem for picking up 12?

You'll have to point it Northeast, towards Madill, OK. (Obviously an antenna rotator would help, although I use a separate antenna instead.)
