KXII vs KTVT/KDFW for sports

I just moved into a house in Lewisville, near Eagle Point Marina/Sneaky Pete's (NE corner of FM407 and I-35E). We are getting KXII 12 surprisingly well using a Terk HDTVa in the attic! Curious question regarding their choice of sporting events... do they ever show different NFL/college/etc games than KTVT or KDFW? Thanks in advance. I realize the PQ is not as good but it's nice to have.

A good place to check is www.the506.com which has regional maps for NFL games plus info on college broadcasts.

I've noticed on a few occasions the maps showed KXII airing different NFL games than the DFW stations.

On rare occasions KENS in San Antonio has carried a different game than KEYE in Austin. The way it was explained to me, the decision is made at the network level because they promised advertisers a certain number of viewers.

KXII is one of the primary reasons that I opted for OTA. There have been several occasions when either their CBS (12-1) or Fox (12-3) NFL feed(s) differs from KTVT and KDFW. There have also been those times when the D/FW facilities don't carry a double header but KXII does. I've never seen a different college game on KXII.

I also like KXII for carrying "Family Guy" which airs at midnight followed by "King of the Hill". OTA is also a must have for me on Sunday nights since KTXD (47-4) carries "The Fugitive" whereas their main channel airs some sort of cheaply-produced nonsense.

Initially the networks make the game assignments, but individual stations can request a change, based on perceived local interest.

For instance, KEYE used to concentrate on Tennessee Titans games when Vince Young was playing there. They also threw in some Cleveland Browns games because of Colt McCoy. KBTX has run some Dolphins games as Aggie alum Ryan Tannehill is the QB.

KTVT tends to avoid running Houston games even though the rest of the state's CBS affiliates usually go with the Texans.

Here in Austin, I'm sure the stations would be happy to have the Cowboys everyday. They pulls amazing ratings here, win or lose.

Not this year, with one exception KTVT has gone with the Texans when they're available to do so. That exception was when it carried Ravens-Eagles instead of Texans-Jaguars.

Next week, KTVT(and most of the rest of the state for that matter) will air Browns-Cowboys over the Texans game. And it could happen again in Week 16, when both the Texans and Cowboys are on the same network(they're on Fox that week).

Thanks for all the feedback. I ended up moving the Terk HDTVa in the attic to optimize DFW signals. I currently get all the full and low powers from downtown and Cedar Hill but I've lost KXII 12. I'm considering replacing the Terk with a proper/better antenna so I am open to suggestions. The ultimate goal would be getting everything I get now plus KXII 12. I'm thinking it's going to be a little challenge because if I aim at Dallas, KXII 12 will come off the "back side" and the angle might not be optimal. Thanks in advance.

Only the UHF part of the Terk is unidirectional. The VHF part is rabbit ears, which are bidirectional; so KXII being "behind" the antenna shouldn't be a problem. But for anyone in Lewisville, KXII is probably too distant to work well with rabbit ears.

The easiest thing to try is to tune the rabbit ears for KXII and hope they work OK. They'll probably still be fine for WFAA, which is both stronger and closer. Luckily the Terk is in the attic, so you can lay the rabbit ears "flat" and orient them 90 degrees from the direction to KXII without folks tripping over them. This may mean one ear swings about 15 degrees forward and the other 15 degrees backward relative to the UHF part (which I assume is pointed at Cedar Hill). Make each ear slightly under 3 feet (34-35 inches). You might also try different places in the attic to see if you can find a spot where both KXII and Cedar Hill come in OK.

If that doesn't do the trick, you'll need a higher-gain antenna for KXII. I have a Winegard YA-1713 you're welcome to try, but you'll also need to combine the signal from that with the signals from your Cedar Hill antenna, which will be tricky.
