KXIR is "On the Air"

Noted KXIR on last night for the first time, with music and talks from the KSER General Manager. He wanted it to be a source for the community (89.9 KXIR) so that people could get on the air. But what does this lead to? Interference to KMWS and KNWP! Oh joy...

What do you think of having KXIR on? Do you think it will work? Begin your discussion!

I support local radio. I'm sympathetic to people who enjoy distance listening, I do myself. But I think it's always a good thing when there are more local service, community broadcasters that aren't simply repeating a national network. Hopefully KXIR will attract and train talented people in the community and be sustainable.

Have to agree. It's a pretty safe bet that Congress didn't think of out-of-town listening when they defined "public interest, convenience and necessity" in '34.

As for whether or not KXIR will "work" - it will, as long as there's enough passionate people who want it to.

GREAT to see more use of the "Reseverd Band" channels. That is what the band of channels were ment for. Local - educational stations - that would provide local radio service,
KXIR does cover more fish than people - but there was a very large open space of land and water area that had no local educational radio service. I have been DXing for many years and I say - the more stations the better -- so long as they are FM. If KXIR covers more water than land mass -- who cares. More people have a local radio station to listen too. Better than having to listen to no station at all or a station "in the mud" way off in radioland. Most educational stations have internet feeds to hook-up to as well as over the air signals. We need more stations like KXIR. Fill up the spectrum. All the other big monster companys are. soon - every open space of the Commercial dial from 92.1 to 107.9 will be filled with full powered, low powered and translator and booster stations. What is wrong with KXIR providing radio service to an area that has no other radio service.?? Good for KXIR.

Thinking that all those religious stations, other than KCMS, need to go off the air - forever. CSN does NOT need 89.1, 105.7 and 107.3! They block other stations that far-off listeners may listen to (like CHBE). Also all those NWPR repeaters - they are everywhere and are not really needed. KROH is also a waste of spectrum, at times it ruins my capability to listen to CJZN.

The problem is the FM band is getting unbearable to listen to because of all the co/adjacent channel interference,IBOC noise and don't even get me started on driving while listening to FM. It's making AM sound more tolerable by comparison.

Somehow I think you wouldn't have that opinion if those stations were broadcasting Smooth Jazz or deep Oldies a la early KMCQ.

I am disappointed that KXIR is allowed to use 89.9 with KGHP in Gig Harbour utilizing the same frequency. I think I have mentioned it before, but KGHP is using 89.9, 89.3, and 93.7 (uh oh.. get ready KANY). They could easily just use 89.9 if they could raise the power on that particular frequency, and shut off all of these repeaters. I imagine KXIR will ensure the repeaters continue to stay on no matter what their technical intentions may be.

Jesus... let it go. I'll tell you something. The Kokomo references were somewhat funny the first 145 times. Really?

There is a person, as of this writing, who is on the radio right now who has been on Seattle radio for decades who is broadcasting his final hour before his retirement. Yesterday, another person who has been on Seattle radio for awhile, though not as big as a name, announced her upcoming retirement.

Yet the big topic right now is some station on Whidbey Island that probably has fewer listeners than a Pauly Shore podcast, and of course, Robin & Maynard.

What's more ridiculous?

From what I have seen on this conversation board, people want to talk about a lot of different topics in radio. I have found the kokomo references a lot more entertaining then the thread on KING 5 news anchors that lasted forever :D

Who is retiring?
