Washington KXLE-FM downgrade

If it meets the legal requirements for going through, it will go through. This is all about creating marketable signals. The folks behind this have done it before. The Union station is now a viable Seattle rimshot. The KXLE move in creates one of the better Yakima valley signals. This is a maximization of spectrum. I don't expect much backlash ftom the E-burg locals, but even if there was, that will not stop the move from going forward. Drop in a booster in downtown Ellensburg, or move the little Cle Elum translator over to Ellensburg- "problem" solved.

As far as format, probably Spanish lauguage and religious would be my guess. But that is not the problem of the signal creators- that is up the org that buys the signal. Just like it is up to the org that buys the Union signal.
On paper, it doesn't look like you need a translator.

Thanks Paul, we sound better because we dumped the 30-year-old jingles, and we play more music because we don't need to adhere to WWO breaks and the music isn't processed through a grinder. Plus we're using a new Gates FM transmtter with Orban Inside.
Oh dang, as a CWU student from '97-'01 I remember those jingles. I was always surprised when I've ventured over the mountains and still heard them years later. They definitely seemed like someone's passion project!

No sign yet on any movement regarding those many facility changes other than the KRHR downgrade to Class A. I am surprised 105.7 KZGI has not executed that slight power upgrade and shift to 96.9 . The 96.9+power move would at least help in places like Burlington.

Stations have three years to build out and I've seen it come down to the final day on more than one occasion!

Ironically, there was a filing today regarding an auxiliary antenna on South Mountain. KJET's and KLSY's paperwork was filed today

KJET's paperwork says …
"This antenna system will be shared as an auxiliary facility by stations KLSY 229C0, KDDS-FM
257C, KZTM 275C, and KJET 289C0."

"The proposed auxiliary operation will be on Channel 289C0 (105.7 MHz) with an effective radiated
power of 3.5 kilowatts. Operation is proposed with a 4-element omni-directional dipole antenna
(Dielectric model DCVP4C) which will be mounted on an existing structure on South Mountain, with
FCC Antenna Structure Registration Number 1247912"

KJET-AUX:

The rest of the South Mountain Aux FM filings (KZTM, KDDS) were made on Friday. This is a nice arrangement given the remote challenges up there.

Another piece of the KJET major upgrade puzzle is about to take place. KZGI Sedro-Woolley 105.7 is now announcing the upcoming shift to 96.9 along with more coverage. The announced date is July 21.

If you speak Spanish the announcements can be heard here:

Yes, KZGI will have more wattage but Vancouver's 96.9 seems to have a more consistent signal in Lower Skagit Valley than CBC 105.7 . We'll see...or rather hear.

As subject readers already know, the original title is a misnomer..KXLE actually ended up with a nice upgrade iincluding Yakima in the re-arrangement.

You are correct. 96.9 is lower powered but more than 100 meters higher HAAT than 105.7 and has powerful processing. It definitely punches into the Skagit Valley more than 105.7. This will be pretty awful sounding.

Ironically, another Skagit Valley radio outlet is featured today in a KING-5 story: KSVR. The Skagit Valley College station has a limited coverage area but broadcasts a good percentage of its content in Spanish from Radio Bilingüe. (Too bad KGRG could not have a similar content shift to address community needs.)

KZGI signed off 105.7 today around noon. It has yet to sign on 96.9 . The move is underway.

Jack 96.9 Vancouver is 10 points higher on my SDR's dBm meter than 105.7 Vancouver. Not to mention, 96.9 Vancouver has a great HD signal. A train wreck is coming.

As of 8 pm KZGI is on 96.9. As expected, the Sedro-Woolley signal is a real mess with heavy inference from CJAX in Vancouver B.C. Perhaps with an analog receiver you will have better luck where the hills natural shield CJAX. If you're car radio can decode CJAX's HD sidebands then all bets are off.

Michi wrote a nice summary about "HD-Hijack" which one can now experience firsthand with the KZGI-CJAX arrangement.

See: HD Hijack | REC Networks

Despite KZGI's lower power on 105.7 , the fact that CBU-FM operated only with an analog stereo signal made the Bustos station a much easier listen. The only way for KZGI to quickly improve coverage over Burlington-Mt Vernon would be to launch a pricey HD signal. Even switching to mono will not help KZGI.

Of course, readers will understand that KZGI 96.9 is the sacrificial lamb here. The real reason for the shift is to allow KJET 105.7 on South Mountain to make that big coverage increase into the Seattle market.

The KJET-vs-CBUFM battle collision space will be interesting - somewhere around Marysville on I-5 I suspect. Hopefully, KJET's eventual owners will acquire an HD transmitter to use the HD-Hijack proposition in their favor.

KZGI was on 105.7 last Saturday. Came in reasonably in Burlington.

I also notice KPUG's 97.9 translator can be heard in parts of Burlington.

Get some pretty odd bounces off the Chuckanut range at times. The three B'ham translators broadcast from tower 3 of KPUG's array on Sunset. Not super high nor super powerful, but there ya go. KPUG 97.9 doesn't compete against Seattle Class Cs (with HD) like 96.5 and 98.9- and it shows! They all have the same power but 96.5 and 98.9 are all about Jack and the Bull.

Which Bustos can afford...or perhaps they could get rid of the HD signal they have on KZML 95.9 in my area and put it in KZGI instead.

Any way to tell if the KZML-FM-1 booster in Wenatchee also is running HD mode? HD makes sense in KZML's case as Bustos also has a translator in that town.

I was in Wenatchee last week so I can answer that: No, KZML-FM1 isn't in HD. In fact, the RDS is different. KZML (main) has RDS PI FFFF, and the PS reads DB6400. KZML-FM1 has RDS PI 5347 ('KZML'), which is what KZML had before it began transmitting HD.

KZML-HD2 is fed by KZUS Ephrata, which also feeds translator K225AR Wenatchee.
