KXLQ (Indianola/DSM) is back on the air

As expected, Davidson Media has put Spanish on 1490. That makes 3 Spanish stations in the metro and that's not including the pirate Spanish station at 92.9 (KDLS, KXLK, & KBBG) in addition there are 6 Christian radio stations in the market (K-Love, KDFR, KZZQ, KNWI, KPSZ, and KWKY).

Yeah, I know the hispanic population is growing by leaps and bounds, however, with the construction permit KDLS has to increase power to cover a larger part of the metro, can the area handle 3 Spanish stations?

It's truly mind boggling that there are 9 stations combined between the 2 genere's in this market. KZZQ and KNWI depend on local donations to survive, KWKY has a very local advertising presence and I don't even know how KPSZ survives when there are 2 FM's airing the same music.

It is mind boggling. There is even another religious station in the metro, the LP at 89.7 licensed to Clive but broadcasts from a tower in the east part of the metro.

As far as 940 (KPSZ), in a perfect world, sports or Radio Disney would be a much better format for that (assuming the audio was fixed).

With the whole Spanish thing, it was interesting to see that KDLS showed up reasonably well for their first book yesturday.
Also, I was listening to the pirate on 92.9 and they are running local ads!!!

The way I see it. Both generes come from two different causes. The first is the obvious growing hispanic population. Three stations might work if 1490 can survive, but with a big FM spanish coming on the air soon, I don't see 1490 hanging in there for more than a couple years when you add 1700 in on top of everything.

Second, the Christian programming is obviously saturated, but you have to consider that this is becoming commonplace in many other areas of the country. Also remember that many of the Christian formats are cheap to run b/c most only have a satellite and a transmitter ie; 89.7, 90.5, 940, and KNWI/KNWM 107.1/96.1 is satellite fed music from the twin cities with ocassional local programming. That leaves only one partly-commercial Christian station in the metro, KZZQ.

Part of the Christian faith is 'spreading' the gospel to the masses. The high number of stations fit in with that practice.

I realize that most of these are satellite fed, so the overhead is low for Des Moines Radio Group, Northwestern College, etc. But there's only so much money to go around for "donations" to these orgainzations to keep their operations afloat.

That said, if done right, I would think it would be easier for a sales guy to sale advertising all across Central Iowa on say for example ESPN radio on 940's booming daytime signal than it would to get cash strapped inviduals to support Christian radio.

I say that because 1, since ESPN started airing Mike & Mike in the morning on ESPN2, prior to that ESPN News, their popularity has taken off and 2 ESPN's programming is far superior to that of Fox Sports Radio, the primary outlet for sports radio in Iowa.

Good thought.

I guess time will tell how many of these stay on the air. My guess would be the first ones to go would be 940, since Saga has to maintain it, then maybe 89.7 0r 90.5.

Judging from the program schedule on 940's website, I wouldn't think it would be going anywhere. Most of the day looks to be sold out to preachers, infomercials, etc. The shows must be getting a response from someone, despite never showing up in the ratings, or they wouldn't continue buying the time.

I agree, there are better things that could be done with the signal, but this is probably more profitable.

Sales on sports stations usually revolves around play by play, which CC comes out on top with Hawkeyes and Cyclones. Still, the play by play line up Saga has on 1350 and 940 isn't bad. You'd think they could put something together with ESPN. But they're already getting the money from the play by play... they'd have to give up the money from the preachers... and they might actually have to hire some people. The way radio is today, they'll probably stay with the preachers.

For central Iowa. ESPN is on in other parts of the state.

Music on KPSZ is just unsold time.

As far as Christian radio in Des Moines goes, there are many options right now.

KZZQ 99.5 was the first FM music station in market- they're committed to keep their focus on young adults. As a result, the door was still open for an AC to come to Des Moines.

Life 107.1 (Northwestern) is completely programmed locally. Music is scheduled in Des Moines, the satellite dish is only used for those 2 minute short programs common to Christian radio and the 1 hour of Swindoll and Rainey at 8P. Not going anywhere.

K-Love 90.5 is 100% Sacramento, CA. It's not going anywhere, either (though some wish they would exit stage left!).

KWKY 1150 First in the market. Holding their loyal listeners.

Praise 940 is puzzling. Some in the building know they missed their opportunity to get a solid Hispanic signal in town. Who knows.

KDFR 91.3 is the one station in the market with a solid signal, and unfortunately, reaches only a small fringe of potential Christian listeners.

Calvary has talk/teaching and rock mini-signals through the area, with more cross filed.

Boone 99.3 is still hoping to get into the market....somehow.

There are a lot, yet no one's really taken the market by storm to date.

Thanks-

Dave St. John
