Seattle got the usual great radio coverage of the Hawks win over the Panthers via 710/KIRO--pre-game, the game and post-game....in Spokane what did Seahawks Fans get???? SCREWED!

Here's what happened----KXLY the Seahawks affiliate--instead of the most important game in franchise history 920/KXLY carries Bob Brinker and "Money Talk,"----No Seahawks game, no mention of the game, nor did it's sister station 700/KXLI(ESPN/"The Ticket)........how idiotic is that programming decision?????? Westwood One/CBS coverage was on 790/KJRB.

If I was the GM at KXLY....I would sure demand an explination from my Program Director as to why my station didn't carry the game.....

Am I off on this, or right on??????
______________

If you hear any more on this ... would be very interested in the follow-up. Am BLOWN AWAY at people's inability to do any kind of decision-making any more. So much "if it's not in the binder I am not doing it" mentality ......

Hang on there. KXLY might not have had rights to that game.

IF they were contractually obligated to carry the game (read: clear the spots sold by the Seahawks), then there might be trouble.

But further you go into the playoffs, those PBP terms and rights head off in crazy directions.

Maybe there were technical difficulties? I'd hate to be doing makegoods for them today.

Have to agree with AQH. It was the biggest game the state has seen, and the PD should have known that. My hunch is that some licensing restrictions made it impossible. Hell, I bet the PD was just as frustrated as you and ended up listening to the game on KJRB =P
______________

Westwood One has the exclusives for the Divisional Championship games and the Superbowl. KJRB picked up the WW1 NFL package airing Sunday WW1 games all season, thus securing the game. The only exception: Flagship stations...thus the KIRO broadcast in Seattle.

It's the NFL's call, not KIRO's!

Absolutely correct, AQH. Much like other sports - the NFL takes over all affiliate broadcasts during the postseason.

As a confirmation (of sorts) - KIRO was not using the "Seahawks Radio Network" IDs during parts of the broadcast that clearly would be sent down the network.
Edited by RobStutson on 01/24/06 01:50 AM.

You're off: Westwood One has exclusive rights to the Conference Championships and the Super Bowl, apart from the home stations. Affiliates aren't automatically the ones who get WW1.

Kudos on that last comment! I can't fathom why some posters actually believed that the PD would have accidentally or intentionally not broadcast the game. There is too much money or ratings points to be made. And think about it guys, don't you think that the switchboard at KXLY was lit up with people calling to ask where the game was? Don't you think it pained KXLY to have to say, "sorry, we don't have the rights"?

*I* didn't want to have to say it (above). Spot on!
