I listened to Alan & Heidi for the first time in a long time this morning. Drtylawndre was right, they really shifted to lifestyle or fluff topics. The topics I heard discussed were best ways to wrap holiday gifts, elementary school playground equipment, and #1 hits of the past. When they discussed music, they sold me on it so much that I had to turn talk radio off and music radio on.
I remember Alan Stock's old afternoon show. It was very political/issues oriented, yet fast moving and entertaining. I could tell from listening that Mr Stock is a very smart man. My guess is that on his off time his mind is still filled with thoughts news issues, and political ideology. He does not waste his brain focusing on something as insignificant as playground equipment. Yet he is pleasent enough on the show to act like he cares.
Hopefully this fluff direction is still paying off for them. A few months ago someone posted that KXNT was making big 25-54 gains in AM drive. Is this still true? Are they even in the top 10 in that demo? If listeners do flock towards this subject matter, I am far out of the mainstream when it comes to what I want out of talk radio.
There is one talk show that does a good job covering lifestyle topics. Matt Drudge, heard locally on KXNT Sunday nights. His show is a mixture of hard news, pop culture, and the bizzare. Very similar to his drudgereport website. When Drudge talks about lifestyle topics it's never boring, he focuses on cutting edge trends. He always sounds so intense that he can make almost any subject sound interesting.
