KXNT-Alan and Heidi

I listened to Alan & Heidi for the first time in a long time this morning. Drtylawndre was right, they really shifted to lifestyle or fluff topics. The topics I heard discussed were best ways to wrap holiday gifts, elementary school playground equipment, and #1 hits of the past. When they discussed music, they sold me on it so much that I had to turn talk radio off and music radio on.

I remember Alan Stock's old afternoon show. It was very political/issues oriented, yet fast moving and entertaining. I could tell from listening that Mr Stock is a very smart man. My guess is that on his off time his mind is still filled with thoughts news issues, and political ideology. He does not waste his brain focusing on something as insignificant as playground equipment. Yet he is pleasent enough on the show to act like he cares.

Hopefully this fluff direction is still paying off for them. A few months ago someone posted that KXNT was making big 25-54 gains in AM drive. Is this still true? Are they even in the top 10 in that demo? If listeners do flock towards this subject matter, I am far out of the mainstream when it comes to what I want out of talk radio.

There is one talk show that does a good job covering lifestyle topics. Matt Drudge, heard locally on KXNT Sunday nights. His show is a mixture of hard news, pop culture, and the bizzare. Very similar to his drudgereport website. When Drudge talks about lifestyle topics it's never boring, he focuses on cutting edge trends. He always sounds so intense that he can make almost any subject sound interesting.

Looking at 12+ they are 4th in the market behind Mix, Country and Howard.

25-54 looks better than last year but I can't quote it.

You know, that's pretty damn good!

#4 12+, that is very impressive!, especially considering KXNT is overall #12. I had no idea that mornings outperforms the rest of the station by such a margin. Just out of curiosity, is Rush's first hour included in this figure?

My philosophy is you can't argue with success. If fluff/lifestyle is working this well, keep it going.

Doesn't KXNT outperform in general, simply because KDWN is so clueless in the world of 2005 talk radio?

"Doesn't KXNT outperform in general, simply because KDWN is
so clueless in the world of 2005 talk radio?"---floridabear

It's not just KDWN. Las Vegas, for its size...1.7 Million, is without doubt the worst Talk Radio market in the nation. And, Las Vegas also sits on top of nearly any terrorist target list you can name...for obvious reasons.

KXNT is live and local only 4 hours per day. They're out of town beginning at 9 AM with Rush; irrelevant (to Las Vegas) beginning at Noon with Dr. Laura; three hours out of date beginning at 3 PM, running Sean Hannity in delay; even further out of date beginning at 6 PM with Bill O'Reilly in delay; believe it or not, still more out of date with Mike Gallagher at 8 PM in delay; they're then out of this world with George Noory at 10 PM, (at least he's live)....and culminating with an 18-hour old Rush replay.

KXNT is the first radio affiliate of The History Channel. Virtually uncompeted with, 3 Marconi Awards winners on staff, and yet, still struggles to make the Top-Ten 12+ in this town.

KDWN is run by an autocratic 78 year old woman who, last time I spoke with her, was unable to figure out how to put her telephone on hold. The radio station exists on Colon-Cleansing, Prostate-Health, Reverse-Mortgage, and other Infomercials at the expense of any cohesive programming....if any paying infomercial comes in, whatever current live talk show is immediately pre-empted for it. KDWN hovers around a one share.

K-NEWS is a hodge-podge of nearly everything/anything that's left. Financial shows, business shows, consumer shows, and is mostly brokered. They do have an afternoon show called "Las Vegas Today", that is hosted by a small newspaper publisher with zero broadcasting experience, (except for his next show), who works for free. With 500 watts after sunset, K-NEWS is off the radar, unable to beat a one-share 12+ for the last 4 years.

KDOX is brand new, and runs a totally syndicated schedule, including most of the Salem Schedule, and Talk Radio Network. It's too soon to tell, but they have the second-most cohesive Talk schedule on the dial.

There you have it, Market #32, and only 2 live and local Talk dayparts M-F....PER DAY!! Only one L&L per day on the weekends....again KXNT.

If a terrorist attack happens here some afternoon, as a citizen of Las Vegas, you have a better chance to hear about it first on network news, than on a local News/Talk radio station.

Except for KXNT's morning show, the Las Vegas Talk Radio market is worse than clueless....It's simply irresponsible to the citizens of this community.

Indeed, but I would contend that a serious operator could come take over at KDWN, reimage as "Newsradio 720", put Southern Nevada's Morning News on 5-9am with local talk, Savage, and what not throughout the day, and give the otherwise boring lineup at 840 a run for its money. The "Boredom Block" of O'Reilly and Gallagher has to be vulnerable to something decent... perhaps live/local in PMD and Savage 6-9 on the 50kW regional pattern. And of course, Rush has been beat by GOOD local talk.
Edited by KJCB on 11/07/05 04:37 AM.

Exactly why a CC operation with self-aggrandizing news imaging ("in-depth team coverage", etc., etc., 24/7 live local news) is necessary and will eventually happen if the right people can get the right signal.

Yea, 14-hour old Mike Gallagher is truly riveting. He doesn't have anything to say live.

It's typically even a little higher than that... Claire should teach a class on how to schlock up your station with rubbish like "The Truth About Nutrition" and all the CD shows they run and still maintain the #2 talk position in the market with close to a 2 share 12+.

Las Vegas is the capital of brokered radio, and it's good to see that amidst the disgraces like 1230 and 1400, that KNEWS can position itself as a real station and actually just be a dumping ground for paid financial talk. But to the average listener, they're like a watered-down KFI. But they're financials aren't too great; they should probably just go all progressive talk. I do like the morning news though, although they don't have the stick for it.

KDOX: #1 in my 2006 Talk Radio Deadpool. They're asking $750/hr for brokered time on weekend nights until midnight... please!

I wouldn't be surprised to see KDWNs 12+ rise due to the demise of KJUL. Despite all the paid junk programming on the station, I could see them cracking a 3 share. KDWN is the only station left that really appeals to the 70+ audience. I think that some of the old folks actually sit through the infomercials because they think of KDWN as a companion or friend.

Except for anyone in the far SW, you've now got 104.7.

Re: KDWN

1280 has a good line up...but it is all a rehash....Jerry Doyle does seem to break out of the mold at times...he says he's based in vegas...it would be nice to see him do a commentary on tv ...maybe up against Doug Basham...(if he is still alive.)

..kxnt...if ratings are up ...who's to argue...I notice they are on speaking terms with Harry Reid.....Alan Stock is probably the only person on air at kxnt that station with a brain....I bet he knows the difference between a Sunni and a Kurd....but with Clark county going for kerry and bush's ratings low...why not leave hard politics for something else

Funny, you rip on three places you've been canned from(yes, canned from....spin it anyway you want but you were fired, maybe you left before you got canned but it all means the same) and another you would work for but probably would be "let go" from within a year. I respect your desire to better LV Talk but you go about it the wrong way. When your butt is in the HOT seat(that means being a P.D.) you can make the calls.....otherwise you should try to be a team player, that means following a lead....not second guessing those above you!

Dolt...The reason I rip those three station is because: THEY'RE THE ONLY TALK STATIONS IN TOWN!!!...HELLO!!! And yes, for varying reasons I have discussed here, they suck. (KDOX is too new to evaluate.) Nothing I have reported here is untrue. Nothing! It's not even unfair! ADD UP the current 12+ numbers of K-NEWS, and KDWN, and you still don't break into the top 15 stations in Las Vegas.

Further, quitting and getting fired ARE two different things. True, I was fired at K-NEWS by a guy who got fired himself for incompetence. I fired Jack Landreth because I believe he's a juvenile delinquent. (Seen KSFN's ratings recently?) I walked away from KDWN because Claire, (and it pains me to say it) is in my view, mentally incompetent. Would these people have fired me within a year? Probably. Why...?

BECAUSE THEY'RE INCOMPETENT. (At LEAST in my opinion, and if not, by their own actions, and track records.)

"I respect your desire to better
LV Talk but you go about it the wrong way."---voiceguy1

What's the right way? I'll give you an example....I was KXNT's afternoon board op/traffic guy, (and you question me about being a team player), when flash floods swept through Las Vegas. These floods were covered by ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, FOX News, MSNBC, Reuters....Hell, even K-NEWS covered it. But NOT KXNT. Before I called the boss on his company cell phone, I had arranged for a part-time guy to go out and cover the story via his personal cell phone, but was turned down by the PD at the time, (who was partying at The Palms), because it would have cost the station $16.00. What did I do? Nothing. I said nothing....

OK....What did I do wrong?

"When your butt is in the HOT seat(that means being a P.D.) you can make the
calls.....otherwise you should try to be a team player, that
means following a lead....not second guessing those above
you!"---voiceguy1

Again....The proof of everything I say is in the public domain. TURN ON THE RADIO, and LISTEN. In point of fact, I asked for the PD gig at KXNT & KSFN....I BEGGED for the PD job at KDWN, because KXNT is so weak and vulnerable even I could beat them.

No one in Las Vegas has a better record of being a team player. No one. Time and time again, I have set my own plans aside for the greater good of the station I was working for, (and much to my detriment). In fact, my leaving KXNT was a fine example of that. Being a good team player also means knowing when to sit down.

I never second-guessed any of my PD's while I was working for them. If I had a problem with a decision, I asked them to explain it BEHIND CLOSED DOORS. If they asked what I thought, I told them. Face to face. Man to man....(alias boy.) And then, AFTER I LEFT THE STATION, AND AFTER THEY STARTED LYING ABOUT ME BEHIND MY BACK, I stood up and told the truth, which is always the best defense. Nothing I have ever said about these people comes as a surprise to them. They have copies of my memos saying exactly what I've told you, and saying a lot I haven't told you.

None of the people I have referred to could possibly have a clear conscience. Well I do. And they know why.

Finally. When the subject turns to me, you simply have no idea what you're talking about. If you did, you'd put your name and reputation on it. That someone with an alias would take part in a public forum and castigate someone for second-guessing is absurd, bordering on idiocy.

So step out of the darkess then. Put yourself on the line publicly as I have. And if not, why not? Cause you can't take the heat....characterfreeguy1?

You know? I believe you...Truly, I'll bet you actually do make fun of old people in that condition.

Perhaps, after you've actually won in a competitive environment, you'll develop the kind of self-respect it takes to make a move like that....It sure won't happen because you have the character.
