Nebraska KXSP (the former WOW) goes silent

Where would these hypothetical translators come from? There's no window to apply for new ones, and nothing near Omaha that could be productively moved.

And where would you put a translator that's more than 25 miles from Omaha, anyway? Not a lot of population to sell to until you get to Lincoln, which is a separate market.
KCRO has or had a translator in Lincoln, and it was one of their station.

I don't see why reviving this AMwouldve been worth it any other way, ie: putting the Boomer format on it.

They're blaming the station's downfall on the call sign change:

I agree it's a little far-fetched considering that change happened more than a quarter-century ago. Plus, the calls went from WOW to KOMJ to KXSP. So, it's factually incorrect, too.

I mentioned it earlier in this thread, but I was listening when the change from WOW to KOMJ happened. Can't remember the final song on WOW, but at midnight the Monday before Thanksgiving, it simply ID'ed as "Magic 590, KOMJ Omaha."

Boomer already has a translator in Lincoln at 106.7. I understand it relays an HD subchannel of 97.7 which carries the programming. Assuming Walnut can get 590 up to full-power with a similar signal contour as what it had before, it should be able to use that translator to relay 590 so it wouldn't have to pay Flood for use of a digital channel on 97.7. I believe that translator previously relayed KCRO 660. Your broader point, however, is correct. That's about the only situation for using 590 to feed a translator would seem viable to me.

Not hearing any hint of 590 WOW/KXSP tonight. Perhaps they were just testing the last few days that they were on.
You mean the most logical reasoning ends up being what is happening?

Walnut made a huge deal to get ALL of the Sports rights for the University of Nebraska in Omaha. Wouldn't it make sense to get a station to put them all on so their not preempting regular programming for volleyball or baseball games with lower demand?

Do you know if this station will have the rights to the College World Series?

I wasnt aware/missed that news....

Boo, syndicated sports.

So much for the nostalgic return of WOW.

Only good thing about that is it's easier to DX through a talk program than it is with music.
there’s more money to be made in sports radio than music.

The cornhuskers are like a religion out there.

plus they’ll have a local show and other local/regional sports.

That would pretty much render all of their existing frequencies useless. Will 590 resume their full coverage area though?
Considering they were pursuing the WOW calls, it was unexpected that they'd largely be taking over where SummitMedia left off, albeit with broadcast rights to University of Nebraska games, and McGraw Milhaven at night.

The local games and pre-post game show content will definitely help. Not so sure about the nationally syndicated sports talk shows. It takes a real hardcore sports fan to be interested in hearing talk about game plays and players' stats for teams from other states.

590 WOW is currently on the air as I type this, aring an old Huskers game and airing promos for July 6th.

And the KHJ request (allegedly because KKHJ calls would sound like ca-ca in Spanish) and the flood of station owners demanding their historic three-letter call signs back again afterwards was pretty much the last straw. I don't know of any others who got theirs back after the KHJ mess.
KKHJ never gave the call letters in Spanish. Liberman dreamed that up as an excuse to get the simpler… and heritage… call letters back. And in any case, the call letters were given in English very rapidly at the top of the hour and no other place.

I agree it was somewhat unexpected that 590 would, more or less, pick back up where it left off. Having said that, sports will almost always make better money than a format targeting a 55+ audience.

We already have a pretty good idea of how well the nationally syndicated shows will do. 590 drew a 0.1 after the local shows left. The local shows would seem to have been where 590 was making its money, and, as I'm sure you know, Husker football is practically a religion in Nebraska.
