KXT 91.7 A few months in--

Since a few months have passed, Do you guys have any new feelings about KXT? I still like it--I still say they are the only one in the DFW area playing this type of music--obscure & out of the box as it is. What are your thoughts since the station has had some time to get out there in the market?

It's the only FM I listen to (aside from The Ticket's 104.1 MHz when I get out of pattern).

"Music for music snobs. We are KXT 91.7 public radio for North Texas."

I've tried it and it's too obscure and the hosts too full of themselves and their superior music tastes for me.

I still like it -- although the fund raising was a bit of a drag.

I've gotten used to the commercial-free format so much that, when I'm listening to other stations, I find it odd when they go into spot breaks.

There are some little things I would do to tweak the station -- sprinkle in more Americana, Blues, Texas Country/Rock -- but, overall I'm really enjoying the eclectic music. Sure beats hearing Boston for the umteen-millionth time.

"KXT - Dead Air to the CORE"

Can't begin to tell you how many times I have heard extended periods of silence. In one case, it lasted for 42 minutes during the noon hour, interrupted by NPR news, then right back to local nothingness. Is this station automated? Maybe it NEEDS to be! Makes one wonder if anyone is listening, AT the station or otherwise.

They had some automation and STL issues within the first month or so after launch, but they've pretty much ironed all that out - it's been much smoother on air particularly since the first of the year.

I love the mix of music - it's far better than commercial radio in terms of variety and quality. I don't think the presentation is snobby at all - it's pretty much just back-announcing all songs with a few promos and occasional interviews/in-studio performances sprinkled in. And it's not all that obscure, either - pretty much everything they play is either on the AAA charts, local, or fairly well-known alt or alt-classic recurrents.

D/FW is a better radio market having this kind of station.

I'm rooting for this station to succeed, but I find myself listening very little. I check it out, then flip to KTCU or WRR.
I don't get the mix. It's 99% obscure to me, but then, I don't follow the charts.
Sometimes I hear the announcers talk about the artists like we're all supposed to know who they are, but I haven't a clue. Another complaint is the way they don't announce the title or artist next to the song. I'll hear an occasional song I like, but never hear who did it.
The processing is too bright. I find it fatiguing.
For some reason the signal keeps popping back and forth between mono and stereo.
That said, I agree that the market is better off to have this station.

I've tried my best to give it a fair shot but it just is too all over the map for me. A good station needs to be cohesive and the "music snob" (as someone referred to it) environment of 91.7 just doesn't grab me. Just as free form AOR didn't grab me back in the day. Like the other poster I'm glad it's here and it will find a niche. It's going to take awhile and will eventually require the hand of someone whose can program a little bit more to the masses while maintaining the musical elitism they're trying to project. Their ratings are pledge drive results.

That's true about the ratings/pledge drives, 317. KXT exceeded its goal for their first on-air membership drive (which ended this week) and their Arbitron cume continues to rise, so obviously there is a market and audience for what they offer.

I agree...I think they need to make a lil more concerted effort to play some Texas stuff. And not simply for the sake of playing Texas music. Hayes Carll, Lyle Lovett, James McMurtry, Lucinda Williams, deeper SRV etc. etc, are as good or better than most of what IS played. I could handle more Ryan Bingham or Jason Isbell too. I certainly wouldn't go off the deep end like CC did with KZPS...but a little more flavor certainly wouldn't hurt.

I can't seriously listen until they get their processing worked out.

If you don't like the playlist or find the station boring, change the station. There are plenty of options. ;) No station will please everyone. DFW is definitely better off with KXT.

KXT tweaked their processing this past week - seems a few dB lower and not quite as overly bright, with fuller midrange and bass. Sounds good now.

It's a mixture of styles that reminds me of early KNUS and KFAD, mixed with KERA. Sometimes the music gets a little too bizarre for me and I change the station. I do enjoy the playlists on "Undercurrents." We needed something different. I give it two thumbs up.

For a non-commercial station, that TXU ad I heard yesterday sure sounded like a commercial to me. Still sounds over compressed and shrill too. I was listening to it this morning noting how it sounds.
