KXTO 1550 AM / RENO

A study showing the station that if it moved south, and added a few towers, it could go to 50,000 Watts Day and several Kilowatts at night.

If that was a north-south beam, you could relocate the facilities south to Carson City. Not only would 1550 light up Carson City and Reno with an intense signal, but would have highway coverage down to Vegas as a bonus. As it is now, I can hear KXTO in Boulder City in the morning as late as 10AM. Bumping it up to 10kw could be done on the cheap, since the second tower would only have to be res-erected and the lease on the current land is good and to 2030.

the transmitters (all 3 of them) meet or exceed all technical requirements.

There was four in the shack, 2 Bauer FB-5000's with one used for parts, and old RCA 250 watt for night and stand by. The fourth was a solid state 1000 watter; I forgot who made it (CCA), but only needed a little attention to bring it back to life. The transmission side was never a problem, thanks to a great engineer from Sacramento.

Having a working studio, sure makes operation allot easier and having decent processing in an over radioed market like Reno is a matter of life and death for a for profit broadcaster.

Perhaps Stanley, would be better off donating it to a broadcast workshop :), for a really nice tax write off.
I once offered to rebuild the station at my expense, if we could get the first option when it was time to sell (It was declined). If you think outside the box, one could turn 1550 into a profitable operation, even Reno.

If the current deals fall through, contact me. We would be very interested in 1550, Radio Brandy is looking to move out of California & Arizona. There are people out there of means who like what we do, and would like to help us expand our operation. Perhaps we could make things happen sooner rather than latter. 1550 would be of interest, because I already know what it is capable of signal wise and its potential even as a non profit.

Believe me I was surprised too! I happen to be down by the lake listening to KNZR 1560 Bakersfield checking out the radio dial on breaks when I hit on 1550 just in time for an ID. It tends to be seasonal (Spring-Summer) with KNZR, but I have noticed over the years that long distant high band stations tend to hang around later in the mornings than low band AM; which tends to vanish shortly after sunup. Case in point: Back in the early 80's, I use to listen to KACY 1520 Port Hueneme back when it was 50,000's in Tahoe City well into the afternoon before it faded away. All radios I use are stock car radios, some I have used tend to overload in Vegas, but not in Boulder City where many Vegas AM signals are nulled out a bit.

At one time 1550 Reno, was a two tower directional at 5000 watts, that probably helped out a bit. At 50,000 watts, 1550 sould have nice morning coverage down to Vegas. If 1550 Reno was upgraded to 50,000 watts that signal would have to go somewhere! It would have to protect most of the west with 1550's in California, Oregon, Washington, and Salt Lake City to the east. Most likely the signal would be safe to the North & Southeast, a engineering consultant would have a better ideal.

1550 Reno, would be perfect for a religious broadcaster, who wants a station with the potential of a good size coverage area on the cheap.

radioguybroadcasting you asked when greatstart last checked KXTO's signal on the LA board. I hope you don't mine it being answered here.

greatstart lives in Fendley about 33 miles do east of Reno, for some reason KXTO has a null in that direction. I talked to him today and reports it was two weeks since it was last tested. Like I told him, the signal where 395 crosses into California in the south, is surprisingly good. The only thing I noticed was allot of noise (hiss) in the carrier, but that was with the old CRL processor. With a good processor that noise could easily be overcome, and provide good coverage of HWY395 all through Nevada. Improved grounding and a hat on the tower may do allot to improve the signal at low cost.

Like I told greatstart today, $500,000 was not a bad price for KXTO before the meltdown.
