KY AM Problems

Even the big 84 WHAS was off the air last night for 15 minutes, between 12:50 and 1:05 a.m. I heard Terry Meiners talk about a message from an overnight listener to Coast to Coast complain about the station being off in the recent past. Didn't WHAS use to sign off overnight as recently as the 1970s? What was the reason for that? Do you think stations will begin doing this again to save money?

Only if they can automate the process. If they have to pay someone to execute it, probably not.

They have been doing it alot in the last few months. I wonder if it has to do with their problems with IBOC and the antenna system not working correctly?

My radio went out of my Sebring, and I went to the dealer to get a replacement. It cost me $220 for what they had in stock, but imagine my surprise when I discovered I had an AM Stereo! I was going up the dial and came upon KCJJ 1630 from Iowa City, Iowa! It sounds great!

Is there much chance of these stations giving up on HD and going back to AM stereo? I know WHAS was in AM stereo back in the 80s.

Just north of Louisville, dial up WZZB Classic 1390 in Seymour...still AM Stereo to this day & playing music much of the day.

About as much chance as tube-powered Philco tabletops coming back.

The larger question is: will new cars even come equipped with radios five years from now? The AUX audio input jack has already taken over models aimed at the youngest drivers. So, they can simply plug in their iPods and seemlessly transition with what they were already listening to.

Now, as wireless IP continues its inexorable march into all aspects of our lives, the good old car radio's days are numbered. I read recently about a WiFi-enabled refrigerator soon to come to market. If my kitchen appliances are going to be web-based, it's hard to imagine that my car won't be, also.

Talk radio fans will find a way to get radio's in their cars.

Talkradio fans won't need radios in their cars.

They'll be able to listen to any talkshow from anywhere in the world - either by streaming it live or delayed via podcast.

I'm a fan of Clark Howard and Dave Ramsey. That's pretty much how I listen to them now, via podcast.

Actually I've been listening to it, but thanks for the suggestion. Feel free to mention any other stations that are in
Stereo.

That's all I need now, my milk giving me a 404 error code!

"Your refrigerator has failed to start. Windows is attempting to repair you refrigerator. Your refrigerator may reboot several times during this procedure."

Don't look for a comback of AM radio. You'll those that can moving to FM. As the AM facilities age and require $$$ to keep on the air, they will keep going away.

Those aluminum hats also help with reception too! ;D

One problem that AM stations in mountainous areas such as Kentucky east of I-75 have is the ground conductivity is so poor. I've done conductivity surveys there, and there are places that if you shoot current through a test probe into the earth, you can't pick up any evidence of the current 20 feet away!

In many such areas, it's darn near impossible to lay an efficient earth ground radial system for AM, or create one that is phase-stable enough for a directional system. AM is strange-acting enough even on a simple 1-tower omni at times...when you get squirrely ground systems, anything will happen!

AM is not dead...it's right here, lookin' for trouble!
