KYA 1260, Tom Campbell, Tom on KLOK 1170, etc.

I liked KYA 1260 in SF in the 70's / 80's, not as good as KFRC but close to them. They had a different way of presenting the music, but they were "good at it, too"

Do you remember Tom Campbell on KYA, I recall this subject came up years ago here, but to repeat or maybe add more, I remember when Tom would do his "Sunday" afternoon show from MATTHEWS TV & STEREO - TOP OF THE HILL DAILY CITY.
Tom always seemed to work that Sunday thing at MATTHEWS.

here ya go . . . video starts about 7 secs. late, so stay with it,

One late Sunday afternoon going up to SF with my wife for dinner, I purposely took the long way and went by MATTHEWS . . . no I didn't go in, but I could see Tom near the front door doing his show.

I remember to when Tom left KYA and ended up on KLOK 1170 in San Jose, again doing an odd Sunday night show. I think he was only on, on Sunday night at THE CLOCK (KLOK).
Do you remember (on KLOK) when he'd offer on the air to listeners to use/borrow his new Corvette, that was parked in the KLOK parking lot on King Rd. to anybody that wanted to drive it for an hour or so. I never figure this out, but people did show up . . . guess Tom took info from them, their car keys, etc. but he'd do it . . . then off in his "Vette they'd go" I guess they did???

Also does anyone remember Gary Mora, Gary was a fixture at KYA towards its end, playing mainly "oldies", he also was involved in doing oldie shows in the Bay Area. One day at our local post office I saw him and I had no idea he lived in the same town (in the south - east bay) as me.
At the post office we talked, he was a nice person.
He'd often had oldies group members on the phone on his KYA show and let listeners talk to them, I talked with afew over the years he was on KYA.

Again KYA sounded good . . . 5 kw day & 1 kw night non-DA from the tower on Candlestick Hill, right next to the old Candlestick Park. I remember when that tower came down in a storm but I think it was no longer KYA when that happened.
Signal was good day & night where I lived because we were close to the Bay and the signal path was all over saltwater.

1260 KYA!!! (and KYA-FM too)

Tom eventually made it down here to SoCal and became the spokesman for D-O-W- Dow stereo, seemingly forever and ever...

Hi it's me, Tom Campbell for Cal Stereo will always be ingrained in my brain. Tom ran top of the hour commercials and paid our Station in Stereo equipment. He would do live commercials from the stores in the Inland Empire, pay for a 60 sec spot and then do 80 or 90 second commercials. He listed his Phone #, his Mobile # and his Boat# in the Phonebook. He tried to hook me up with free Stereo equipment if I let his commercials run long. I was warned by Fred Cote, KOLA's owner to be on the look out for this. Fred was a murderer and now is in prison

KYA's signal was weak where I lived (in southern Marin). Probably because our signal path went through downtown S.F. high-rises, then all that metal in the Golden Gate Bridge, then the granite of the Marin Headlands.

On a completely different note, I don't think anyone has mentioned that around 1974-75, Tom Campbell hosted a short-lived show on KPIX-TV called SuperBowling.

The Video I posted above started playing all sorts of Tom Campbell videos, not all Stereo related. He also was a voice for Pizza Hut and hosted a game show called Camouflage. My sister had a picture with him backstage at a Wolf & Rissmiller Concert

Gary Mora has done some Youtube videos, interviewing various figures from Bay Area and SoCal radio history.
Thanks bjon830:
I'll look for them.

To others that commented, OK on CAL STEREO spots, I remember them and on SoCals DOW Stereo, I remember them to when I'd go down to SoCal.

People complain about the costs of things. A 40 inch Stereo TV for $1498 when you can get one today for $99. Cal Stereo's were the size of a small house

What happend with the internet station KYA from Gary Mora? Stream is down for me.
Same for me, nothing on the home page. Clicking on the Facebook link, there is a message about a power failure in studio on Oct. 31. Maybe still having power issues?

The original tower was in a depression on the north side of the hill. When Hammett and Edison were hired to make the applications for a new tower they realized most of the power came from the lower half of the tower and the higher ridge of the hill was attenuating it towards the south bay. So when they put up the replacement tower they located it on higher ground next to the building instead of re-using the original tower foundations. This made a measurable improvement to the signal going south.

Going north the signal has to go through downtown San Francisco and the Marin Headlands before reaching the populated parts of Marin County. As a result coverage always suffered up there.

We must have had $100,000 worth of equipment at KOLA that was paid illegally to Frederic Cote. Fred stole my Social Security FICA payments, I should consider legal action against the 90 year old, he is or was a Prison Lawyer, maybe I shouldn't mess with him?

KYA had a great daytime signal but at night we (San Rafael) had to switch to KEWB as KYA disappeared almost completely.
