KYA ... Back On The Air!

JON BRUCE said:
Verne White is now very close to being charged with fraud regarding his claimed ownership of 94.7 KYAF (Formerly KAJP) submitting an application without the real owners knowledge replacing Linda Ross as president of the group that owns the Firebaugh station.  By the way, he never ownd KBAI Morro Bay either !

I notice the streaming audio no longer contains the KYA jingles....and there's now what sounds like a legal ID for KYAF.  (Also claiming to be part of the "KYA network").  Perhaps the possible gathering legal storm has scared the guy into taking the KYA jingles off the air/off the stream.

This one seems to really be getting strange.

It gets worse...he's now pitching KYA to Seattle (why not KJR?) AND soliciting donations! Here's the link:
http://radiokya.com/

And (no surprise), he's no longer listed on the TM Century site.

Seattle is something else

The KYA site in Seattle is for an LPFM that is operated by an engineer named Dr. Sandi Woodruff. She has several LPFMs and translators around the Puget Sound area doing various forms of oldies and some eclectic formats. I think the only connection is that they are running the fake "Chris Edwards" Saturday night show. This station has been on the air up there for several years in varying forms. There was a lot of controversy in Seattle about these operations, as there was an issue on whether they were operating as translators (simulcasting programming from the original station and not doing acutal "local" programming as the LPFM service was designed for.)

Here's a post on the Seattle board from Dr. Sandi from about 6 months ago with some background, but this station is not operated by the "Chris Edwards" discussed earlier...

For the record, I was wrong about the jingles....seemed to me earlier this week they were absent. But now they're back.

I don't know why "Chris Edwards" is seemingly taking a "bogus" approach....his product sounds pretty good.

Yes indeed Vern White sticks up his head...In the 70's he sold Broadcast Equip. for a while, and worked at several small stations in the Valley. He was trully a Radio Groupy.....He even had his own station at his house (He lived with his mom)! He was full of B.S. back then and is still full of it today I see.... Take it from someone who is still on the air 30+ years later and knew this guy.....

Maybe he's just living some sort of fantasy. I honestly don't know what the deal is with the guy, but I've never seen anything like it. Hopefully its harmless.

Re: KYA ... Back On The Air! Cry babies and jealousy abounds!

I listened to the entire show the man did last night and the for the last four weeks too! He is very very good at what he does! Oh! By the way, at least he is on the air and able to do his show his way, which is more than any of you can say for any of the corporately owned radio station employees!!! I smell a lot of sour grapes on this board! What is so wrong about any person doing radio their own way? I might add and having
a lot of fun doing so at the same time! The owners of 1260 KOIT would do well by recreating the sound of the original KYA even if it was just from 3pm to 12mid on Saturdays. Some of you are as bad as some of the B***hy women I know that are always jealously cutting each other down for whatever stupid reason they can come up with!! The man is at least trying to do a respectable job with what he has available to him! I say way to go Mr. White, and carry on!

I've been called b***hy on more than one occasion - but the POINT is - people were annoyed because the guy misrepresented himself as somebody he is not...probably because he figured he'd create more interest in his website by pretended to be an old KYA jock.

Agreed, his station is great. It'd be even greater if he hadn't chosen to misrepresent himself as a former employee of KYA when he is not (and not only that, having the brass huevos to borrow the name of someone who's still alive, well, and in radio). That's just greasy, IMO.

Rupert Pupkin wasn't half bad as a talk show host either...but he was still scary.

Agree absolutely 100%. I don't detect sour grapes. I suspect many feel as I do...."Why can't the guy just be honest". He's put forth a very worthy effort that should be able to easily stand on its own merit....without the falsehoods.

KYA ... Are we all saints?

Hello again, this is radio news person chiming in on the the KYA story........

Radio is about creating an illusion and Chris or Vern has certainaly created one with KYA on line.

My question is do you feel that the powers at Bonneville are saints? What about all the executives, middle managers and consultants at Infinity, now CBS? We've seen many comments on this board.

Everyone has some sort of a vice and in this case Vern White also makes himself known as the Big Fat Chris Edwards, a person who is a figment of his own imagination.

Chris, I mean Vern took me out to lunch at the NAB in Las Vegas this spring. We had a great opportunity to talk about the format and the propects for its future on the internet as well as on the air in San Francisco. My feelings is that it could work well on air as part of a full-service station that makes itself part of the the community.

As an internet station it can certainally have a long future ahead. The music format and personalty of the on-line station can evolve with time as it should.

At this point has Chris Vern White been beat up enough? He has launched a great sounding internet station and we must admit that he did tell us a good story and got our attention.

Yes I was confused for a while. I had heard that Bob Harlow former PD of KFRC had offered a Chris Edwards (who was a salesman there) the opportunity to host a Doo-Wop show on KFRC. Harlow had also offered this show to Chris Kidd before KFRC changed formats.............speaking of name confusion.....

There is a Chris Kidd who is a news and trafffic reporter Saturday nights on KGO. He is not the Kidd, Chris who used to work in recent years at KSFM in Sacramento and is now in Philly.

My question, is KGO's Chris Kidd the same Chris Kidd who worked as a jock in the 70s at KROY and KNDE in Sacramento? Around that time of 1975 to 1977 other jocks at KROY inlcuded Christopher Lane, Russ the Moose Martin, Dean Goss and the Morning show was Uncle Bryon and T.N. Taneka. Roger W. Morgan was the PD. Sounds like some of these guys would be good for the new KYA!

That's my contribution to the subject of the the original KYA 1260, not to be confused with KOIT 1260.

Newsperson

Vern is simply the Freddy Beamer of SF radio. I'm Tom Big Daddy Donahue dig..

Newsperson:

You make some very good points.  I hope I'm not coming across as "bashing" anything about the site/product other than that I wish there'd be more honesty. Heck, I listen regularly, and I like what I hear. I totally agree with you about the illusion aspect of radio (and other forms of entertainment). To me illusion is what was done by Bartell when they purchased the station.... e.g., pump up the commercial load to make it sound busier than it really was for any potential advertisers listening.

But IMHO, there's a line between illusion and misrepresentation.  When people listen and draw their own conclusions....whether from "how a commercial load sounds" or from a name someone uses on the air....that's illusion.  When someone lies and claims to be someone that he/she is not, or makes fasle statements and tries to pass them off as fact, than that's misrepresentation.

My point is simply that Verne/Chris is doing a very worthy and commendable job!  Why the need to go beyond the bounds of "illusion"?Why the false claims?  What value do they add?  And as for the Bonneville execs not being saints, etc.  I'm sure you're right again....at least in some cases.  But "everybody does it" is never an excuse to justify doing something that's not above board.
