KYAA-1200 Monterey Bay is rock oldies again

As of May 1st, KYAA-1200 in Monterey (licensed to Soquel, transmitter in Salinas), went to an oldies format today/early Saturday morning. The station, which is co-owned with KNRY-1240, was airing Asian/East Indian foreign language programming, but that group will now move to KLOK-1170.

So far, they're automated with a loop of about 200 songs from 1955-'68, but hope to get about 2,000 oldies songs to play on the air.
I noticed early Saturday from 3-8 am, they never had a legal ID or any other IDs, only a few ads from KNRY. They simulcasted a live oldies DJ show on 1200 and 1240 tonight with PD Jim Vossen, but otherwise, KYAA-1200, with old KYA jingles, will be automated.
 
Vossen has mentioned that he's trying to line up some investors to purchase
both KYAA 1200 and KNRY 1240 from Joe Rosa...

I wish him well in the endeavor, but they're AM stations with no FM(s) and in
a stagnant economy where it's tough to get the ad dollars for AM stations...

I miss the old KNRY 1240 from the '80s, when it had C-QUAM AM Stereo, a HUGE
music playlist (well more than 2,000 cuts), and top-notch air talent - some from
the L.A. market. The elder Beaton did KNRY very well, but after his family sold it,
KNRY never kept a steady audience...

Interesting. Yes, my buddy and former boss Mark Carbonaro was at KNRY when it was oldies from '82-'86, along with another friend Bob Morgan, who had been at KGBS/fm and AM in the '70s. Went talk after that, but the Beaton's didn't sell it till around 1990 or '91.

They should try to get an FM translator for the oldies on 1200, like a friend of mine did at KTHO-590 in South Lake Tahoe recently.

Looks like they've got the legal IDs in there now at the top of the hour, lol. Vossen is on again at noon Sunday, taking calls and talking about adding more songs, etc. But, I really can't stand him as a DJ, something about his voice that bugs me, I suppose and other things he does on the air that annoy me.

Good ol' Mark C., whom Dennis Terry (a KNRY weekender) knows well...
As I recall, there were problems when the elder Beaton died, and some squabbling
amongst the 2 or 3 sons killed the oldies format. KNRY went downhill after that...

And if K R M L 1410 can get an FM translator, why can't 1200 and/or 1240?
Oh...wait....that means spending money...never mind... ;D

You are not alone on that last sentence, Jim,. However, I do give Vossen credit trying to make
chicken salad from chicken sh** on both stations, especially since owner Joe Rosa keeps a tight
rein on the budget...

2000 songs? If they want any numbers, they need to put the weak 1500 songs into a single category that plays less than 1 an hour otherwise the station will be one big stiff parade.
 
I'm happy to hear KYA is back with the oldies!!! I live in the Vegas Valley area and AM 1200 comes in like gangbusters sunrise & sunset. I remember tuning them in about five years ago and listening then. I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area listening to KEWB, KYA, KLIV, KFRC, KMBY, KSTN, KJOY, KXOA and KKIS. Boy did I give my early transistor radios a workout, along with the car radio.

I disagree. Having 2000+ oldies to listen to works for me. I'm 59 and I miss hearing all the great songs (and some stiffs) that I grew up with. Heck, I listen to them daily commuting back-and-forth to work off my MP3 player in the car. And yes, I include old vintage jingles from KEWB & KYA, that I removed from my old reel-to-reel tapes, that still play.

I'm glad to see that there's someone else who agrees with me that a four-figure playlist shouldn't be shunned. Today when you're running an AM station with a music format, you have got to innovate. Playing the same 500 or so titles will get you nowhere. You must have a reason to get people to tune you in and for advertisers to buy time with you!
 
...One interesting thing about KYAA is that not only are they , in their 50s material , quite fond of the more " pop " end of the 50s spectrum from the " rock'n'roll era " side of the 50s , they even play non-r'n'r stuff from the early 50s !!!!!!!!!!!
You'll note that their home page shows Rosie Clooney as one of " their " artists !
I guess the 50s culture wars are over , anyway , huh :D ???????????
 
Yep the Great KNRY 1240 has gone to the other side.
As a former host on the station , all I can say this is such a major loss to the Monterey Bay that it makes me sad.
The Great KNRY was KMBY back in the 70s and was number on around here.

But as always people buy stations who know nothing about programing and nothing about the history of these stations.

I have taken my show to the internet at KLNJ-DB for now.
Also the MotorSports Show with Tony Karis has moved over with me.

More KNRY hosts will be coming to KLNJ.

Double head aches for the Salinas - Monterey area. The Carmel 1410 station sold to new owners AND the the owner of the 95.9 A at Big Sur -- Saul Levine - is moving the 95.9 over to cover the Salinas - Monterey market and is expected to program JAZZ.
 
This is disappointing--I really liked the programming on KYAA as Radio Humsafar. There was definitely nothing else like it here in Vegas.
 
Miss the Old KNRY from the 80's

That was when my daddy (Bill Beaton) was the GM. Such good memories.
