" KYAA Plays Oldies And Pre-Rock "

Monterey/Santa Cruz/Soquel's KYAA is an oldies/rock Top 40 station...but an odd thing about it is that it goes back to the early 1950s in its regular playlist , playing distinctly non-r'n'r artists such as Teresa Brewer , Rosemary Clooney , and others !
Anyone else heard it ?

I've listened to KYAA although I am not a regular listener. But I'm not sure they are out of bounds on their playlist. I remember listening to a couple of Top-40 stations in the 50's and they would occasionally play songs that were in the Hit Parade but not true RnR songs. Specifically Brenda Lee, Connie Francis, Johnny Mathis, Dean Martin etc.

That's correct. Top 40 was never meant to be synonymous with "rock and roll." KLIF in Dallas was a Top 40 station before the rock era began.

In suburban Detroit there's also a station known as WCXI, 1160 on the AM dial, which bills itself as "rare oldies" (the format is actually on that frequency temporarily while the station that normally airs it, 1460 WPON, is off the air looking for a new transmitter site; WCXI's normal format is actually classic country). Most of it is pre-Beatles rock and roll, pop and doo-wop but they also have a rotation of pre-rock songs in there. I've heard "Wheel of Fortune" by Kay Starr, "Come On-a My House" by Rosemary Clooney and even "Be My Love" by Mario Lanza there. They stream at wpon.com.

...Briefly , yes , the " rR'n'R Era " always included records ON the R'n'R-playing Top 40s that weren't R'n'R (depending on how strict your definition of " rock'n'roll " is , perhaps the majority ???) , but , for one , KYAA is playing pop stuff that doesn't even have that association , stuff from the early 50s .
They've been playing an INCREDIBLY lengthy playlist in general , too , probably in the eyes of you radio professionals !!!!!!!!!

...Would it be a good idea for an oldies station to play some of the " pre-proto- rock'n'roll " music from the late 40s and early 50s ?
Hank Williams and Bob Wills' more bluesy/uptempo sides , say , or Billy Ward and the Dominos , Louis Jordan , like that :D...
