KYND, upgraded?

Is it just me or is KYND reaching further these days? I was on the south side of Houston yesterday and found 1520 pretty darn clear from Telephone and 45 area. I don't recall KYND reaching that far, even on its best day. Is this the new 25kW array approved last year in action, or did I catch KYND at just the right time?

BTW, @ bturner, I checked out "The Shuffle" which is why I was tuned into 1520. I like the music, but wish it was a longer show. I think it was only on for an hour.

Yes, KYND is currently running at 25 kw. with a new Nautel transmitter and 3 tower array from a new site with much, much better ground conductivity. We should be pretty solid throughout the metro. I've been very impressed with what the site is producing. We're still working on all the little details now that the pattern and transmitter and all firmed up.

At the previous 3 kw. power from the old site the weather could really affect us. It seemed if we had an out of town client coming into town to hear the station for the first time we'd always get some early morning fog and clouds and KOKC would override our signal from about 290 at the Beltway and we'd catch it from the client who always thought we were having transmitter problems. And to think KYND signed on at 500 watts (intentionally) since back then anybody could file on top of you when you got the FCC to assign a frequency you found.

Too bad the owner didn't get to see it completed before his passing. It was his dream. I must say he's likely the nicest guy I've ever met in my life and especially as far as bosses go. He was loyal to his employees through thick and thin. People that left the station always returned to visit sometimes years after leaving.

Steph has been running longer in the past few days, running 2 to 4 in the afternoon. I don't know if that's temporary or permanent. She plays some good stuff and as I monitor I'm frequently amazed at 'that' song playing on AM radio. Yesterday it was Baba O'Reilly by The Who. The schedule seems to change here and there, I'm guessing, when contracts for shows are up for the West Coast freelance voice talent they hire to do many of the shows. Maybe Steph will stay at 2 hours. She had 3 hours when she started.

Whoa - this gets my attention - somebody actually playing good oldies on the radio?! Last time I checked there was a lot of Radio China stuff on stations in the 1500's - not very good mix of music, all over the place musically, really. If the station is playing a true oldies format, I may start listening!

It is all over the road and sidewalk musically. Steph usually has some 'theme' on her show. Her Friday and Saturday shows are all oldies. On other days it is mostly 50% currents and 50% oldies. There was one hour she did not too long ago that sounded more like the old KQUE and another that sounded more like Z-Rock. Mostly it is somewhere in the middle. Last week I let out a little 'moo' as I had a cow when she cut the Door's Riders On The Storm at about the 4.5 minute mark but she got me back with Eric Clapton's Let It Rain.

She's on 2 to 4 these days.

You've made my day, bturner. 1520 is a powerhouse both at my job (IAH airport area) and at home (BW8 & Vets Memorial). My one complaint was that at the TOH, the song I was listening to (Pride by U2) was dumped midway through the song and went into the contact information for C.R.I.'s DJ's and subsequent TOH ID for you and KGBC. Man, I was jamming that U2 so loud that the folks in the car next to us was giving me the stink eye. :D

BTW, why the drop of Houston from the ID? Noticed it's only "AM 1520, KYND-Cypress" now. You don't like us Houstonians anymore?? ;D

Except fog and clouds would have nothing to do with that. You were getting residual skywave during critical hours shortly after sunrise or shortly before sunset. More of an issue at the higher end of the band. During the winter, under the right ionospheric conditions, you can get some skywave in the middle of the day.

Any thoughts of another attempt at nighttime service?

The songs getting cut for the TOH break happens frequently. I guess she does a 60 minute segment but after they add local news and stuff, they wind up playing about 53 minutes.
