KYNO ads in Bakersfield

I saw two city buses down here covered with ads for KYNO featuring Dennis Miller. How can that be worth it? How is the advertising in other valley cities. I would imagine Fresno should be covered if they are bothering with Bakersfield.

Probably done by the same ad agency that buys radio time in Bakersfield for Save Mart supermarkets, with copy that only talks about what they're doing in Fresno.

I think the owner of KYNO also runs the agency. That buy does not make any sense. Have you seen their Fresno numbers? Probably not, because they don't have any.

No I haven't seen the numbers but I do kinda root for them. Fresno should have two choices. Are they advertising much in Fresno? Crazy thought... could it be possible that Dennis Miller is somehow behind this? 940 sounds ok here (just ok. KMJ is much better) in the daytime maybe he thinks this could bag himself a bakersfield affiliate?

KYNO is advertising on Fresno TV stations early evening on the main network affiliates. haven't seen any FAX buses in Fresno with Dennis Miller on them though. With KYNOs 50k signal and with their transmitter located near Dinuba, makes sense to advertise in Bakersfield.

KYNO doesn't put a usable signal over Bakersfield. Can you hear it there?...Yes. But again, even with the 50kw signal and tower location, it doesn't put a usable signal over Bakersfield for most radio listeners....Only for radio geeks.

I agree, very few living in bakersfield would listen to 940, even being a radio geek myself I wouldn't bother except that Im from Fresno and wish I still lived there. Also I kinda dig Imus, Medvid and Bohannon, but I wouldn't even know they were on if not for being a Fresno/radio geek. To listen to 940 at night I have to use my "best" radio or be in the car, and put up with an annoying hum, usually I have to give up on Bohannon after sunset. I think the hum is caused by Khty 970 increase to 5000 watts at sunset. Either way money poorly spent. KERN sounds better in Visalia than KyNO sounds in Bakersfield (during the day anyway)

John doesn't own JSA, if that's what you're referencing. He sold it to Bruce Batti...

....as to ratings, KMJ FM isn't that far ahead of KYNO these days....

I really like 940 KYNO. But, 940 KYNO's signal doesn't hit Bakersfield too well, (a little weak) KMJ hits Bakersfield MUCH better though. 940 sounds good as far south as the 46 in Famoso, after Lerdo Hwy in Shafter, I get that annoying Humm. I e-mailed KYNO once and told them, their signal doesn't hit Bakersfield well and got no reply from them, so I don't know if they are aware of this problem. Why doesn't KYNO drop the advertising $$$ in Bakersfield and spend that $$$ on erecting a taller tower first? Ha ha. ;D

A taller tower for an AM station does not yield the same results as a tall tower for an FM or TV station.

When I first moved to the SF Bay Area (mid '80s) Fresno's 940 was country, and quite strong here. I don't know if their signal has deteriorated or if the interference is that much worse, but it's pretty much unlistenable today. I guess it's possible that something isn't working quite right there.

Most people comment how AM station signals have deteriorated over the years when in fact it's increase interference. That's why there are only 2-3 viable AM stations in most large markets. Of course, KMJ's signal is better than it was before in some places since it's now 50kw DA instead of 5kw ND.

I always hear how people complain for example that San Francisco's 610 and 680 appear weaker in their homes in Sacramento for example. I explain to them... How many live PC's did they own in their homes in the 1970s or how many servers did they have in their offices back then compared to now. LOL

Here in LA, there's so much noise that Beverly Hills licensed KKGO (transmitter in the Valley) is really noisy in my home nearby Hollywood.

That is very true about interference. In Fresno at night, I cannot get 780 KKOH Reno due to 790. 780's signal just fades in and out. However, I was driving on the 210 thru Pasadena the other night and 780 KKOH was blastin' away loud and clear. So I think I can relate to that.

While driving north on 99 thru Bakersfield last night, I notice a pretty strong 950 AM signal from Tijuana that may be the reason for the interference for 940 KYNO. As soon as I pass 7th Standard Road (North end of Bakersfield) it goes away and 940 KYNO comes in a little better. So, that must be the reason for the big humming sound.

I hope someone from 940 KYNO is reading these posts!!!

I had the opportunity to drive to the Central Valley over the weekend & checked out 940. Their signal is probably fine. I totally forgot that 960 in the Bay Area is running IBOC. That's why 940 reception is so bad here.
