KYNO Bringing Back "The Boss"

I forgot one big KYNO to KHJ move...Sean Conrad. Sean went to KYNO in 1970 from WKNR, Detroit, and became Program Director within a year. He went to KHJ in 1973 as PD, but just after Drake left RKO, so it was more a talent raid by Paul Drew (Drake's successor, promoted from KHJ PD to RKO National PD, who had to hire his own replacement at KHJ) than a promotion from within (actually forcing Drake to deal with a PD vacancy at KYNO within days of leaving RKO).

And in re-reading an earlier post, I didn't make it clear...one jock climbed the ladder rung by rung from KYNO to KGB (with a visit to KCBQ, then back to KGB) to KFRC to KHJ: Johnny Scott/Bobby Ocean. Harry Martin/Eric Chase almost did the same (minus KCBQ), but went to work for Drake at KIQQ instead of going to KHJ.

So Osh (who arrived at KHJ post-Drake and did some time for the competition in San Diego) followed the RKO ladder the furthest from KYNO, but Harry/Eric went the furthest with Drake himself, not working with anyone else until Drake left KIQQ in '77.

Some fun (and useless) trivia: In 1963-65, Ray Lenhart worked overnights at KMBY-AM (1240}, using the name Ray Farrell. He later worked at KYNO-Fresno at Johnny Scott, then at several stations in San Diego, Los Angeles and San Francisco as Bobby Ocean.

I really can't say that Charlie Tuna adds much. How about a KOKO 94/KYNO1430 simulcast? Cuppa Joe Collins in the morning?

I like it, what John needs to do is try to LMA 100.3 from Richard, to extend the coverage on FM, their (100.3) LP signal will still make the AM valuable.

At times, it all comes together. Other times...well, Glen Campbell doesn't segue into Hendrix. Crap, the hotline would be buzzing within seconds if that ever happened. They need to expand well beyond the 300 song rotation and add a few more years into the mix. Where some of the nearly B-sides come from in such a tight rotation I don't know. That said, E knows the limits of a jock less format.

When are we going to hear the Million Dollar Weekend jingles?

"John" and alot of others have already tried to LMA or buy KMAK. However - the owner is on cloud nine as too what KMAK is worth. And if KNGS ever goes back on the air -- KMAK would sound like a 10 watt class D station over Fresno.

I really like Charlie Tuna especially when he's on in LA because he does an LA show! He is totally out of place on KYNO with all the canned BS! John needs to get a local morning show and give the people listening something to relate to besides just the music, along with traffic, sports, and of course the weather! Charlie Tuna being sampled for a Hip Hop record being discussed on a Fresno radio station is a bit of a waste of time! John you can do better than this!

Just got one of those "You were mentioned" emails from the latest social media site, Newsle <[email protected]>, mentioning not only myself but a few close friends, Johnny Scott, Radio Ray Ferrell, Ray Lenhart and Bobby Ocean.

First--
Thanks for the timeline refresher course and the million dollar memories, you guys. (Particularly Micheal Haggerty, who is our uncredited but nearly official broadcast archivist, particularly keen on remembering dates, frequencies and fictitious mic names as clearly as if he were in two places at once, then and now.)

And:
As you can see -- from just the past few pages in this ongoing conversation -- there are a lot or armchair quarterback questions, assumptions and opinioons. But what really helps those actually in the driver's seat most are the inclusion of possible solutions.

For example, ASKING or EDITORIALIZING about:
•...the Million Dollar Weekend jingles?
•KYNO needs more help than Charlie Tuna...totally out of
place on KYNO with all the canned BS...
•The original "Boss Radio' sounded better, you cant copy an original...

is not as powerful as including a possible solution. This keeps the thread moving forward. Examples in the past few pages:

•John needs to ... extend the coverage on FM
•How about a KOKO 94/KYNO1430 simulcast?
•They need to expand well beyond the 300 song rotation
and add a few more years into the mix

Solutions, everyone. Possibilities! We are operating from infinity: what could we do to evolve things and look our best doing it?

Can't copy the original, but it can be continued, to be "boss" JO must hire a boss jock and put him in the downtown KYNO studios. Joe would be awesome but lets not forget KOKO is the competitor. Charlie Tuna adds nothing no one is listening who wouldn't be otherwise because of him.

FM would be great, everyone knows music on AM is dead :( But the bills could still get paid running the station on 1430.

Maybe if JO is going for people who really care about boss radio as an listener base he should try Don Geronimo in the mornings. Lots of behind the curtain old radio stories. Too bad he won't spin records.

But really can the tuna. I would much rather just hear the good music 300 songs or so on shuffle. Do the morning show right or don't do it at all.

KYNO has been off the air for 4 days, does anyone know what's up? Did they give up on oldies and changing format again? ,or is it a technical issue?

KYNO is back on, I didn't think they would give up on it this quick, they had a .9 in the Winter ratings (over All), a good starting number for an AM playing music.
