KYOT - New Format A Bummer!

I was out volunteering on Monday at Tempe Community Action and they were playing a radio station in the work area. I really liked the nice mix of music and immediately assumed it was KEZ. It wasn't until several songs that the station identification was announced as KYOT. I was shocked to hear the music they were playing didn't realize how drastic the format change was, even described here on this message board. I believe one of the songs I heard was Lionel Richie All Night Long. I think I will be adding this to my station pre-sets in my pick up truck. I really liked the mix of music they were playing. I think this is a decent format.

I got this cool little wifi portable that streams via wifi connection. I stream what ever i want across the nation. It is not an IPOD touch or IPHone, but if you like to get access to thousands of stations across the world without a freaking computer, Its the next best thing for $80 if you like personal listening at home or MCDonald, starbucks, etc...LOL. I still have to use my XM radio since I can't stream in my car without wifi connection, but I like the quick access to a station in the London for example.

What did you buy? I bought the Myine Ira. I hooked it up to an FM transmitter. Ever wished your local radio dial would fill a format hole? Now you can! Buy two of them and you can "fill" 2 format holes around your house.

I use mine to stream punk country.

It's unlike me to revive a dead thread, but in the past week, it appears that they've eliminated nearly all of the "Smooth Jazz" instrumentals, and has instituted a format that sounds like "Hot 105.9" circa 1997 - "R&B Classics and Today's Hits" - with heavy emphasis on the "Classics."

Playlist is a bit tight (I haven't heard Sheila E.'s "The Glamourous Life" get as much airplay since KUKQ in 1984, when it was a hit single!). Signal and sound quality is better than Mega's. The missing elements are higher-energy sweepers.

Last 11 tunes:

Gap Band - Party Train (and a remix edit, not the single or LP version)
Marvin Gaye - Let's Get It On
Earth, Wind & Fire - Let's Groove
Jean Knight - Mr. Big Stuff
Stevie Wonder - You Are The Sunshine Of My Life
Tierra - Together
Commodores - Brick House
Sade - Hang On To Your Love
Janet Jackson - Escapade
The System - Don't Disturb This Groove
LTD - Back In Love Again

Sweeper voice sounds ethnic. Just swept back into Whitney Houston - All The Man I'll Ever Need. This hour could have played on Kiss 1230 circa 1996.

Mega flinched at KYOT's changes, and now their DJ's are using the slogan "Arizona's Number One Old School Station." It won't be for long as long as their audio quality sounds like a worn-out cassette tape.

I just wish they would even out the classic hits with more of todays hits. I would listen more.

I haven't heard anything I'd call "today's hits" yet. Newest song I've heard is from 2009. This is all R&B gold.

Has the smooth jazz been banished to HD2 (where formats go to die) yet?

I heard MEGA using the #1 slogan a couple weeks ago so I doubt they were flinching at the change KYOT made on Monday.

OMG what happen to horrible blah blah the new 95-5??? I just tuned in and havent turned it off. Love the music mix ;-) All I would like and its because I love entertainment/personality radio is to add some of the great urban ac shows. I wouldn't mind hearing some Michael Baisden in pm drive and maybe something like Steve Harvey, Tom Joyner or Doug Banks. Love the music mix though, 95-5 is back on my presets woooohooo

Oh and side note.. I hope they drive Mega so crazy that Mega decides mmmmm Energy needs to be back on the radio but on all four of their dials ;-)

KYOT can still get pretty soft. Natalie Cole w/ Nat King Cole doing "When I Fall In Love" just doesn't sound right next to Keith Sweat to my ears. But I'm a 40 year old white guy. The other annoying thing I've noticed on KYOT is they're fading some songs way early. They also haven't quite changed all the inserts on the stream to match the new format.

Looking at Sean Ross' sample hours, Mega is playing some pretty solid records - probably the closest to mainstream that the station's ever been. They do step out of the box a little bit on the mix shows.

The temptation for Mega will be to go deep to show that they're more "pure" than KYOT. If you have to pull out the Shazam app to identify any song that they play, they'll lose.

Oh, and here's hoping that Cheryl "Pepsii" Riley will never pop up on either station. Some dusties deserve to stay that way.

I guess we'll all know in a short while but I'm guessing the long term result will be that KYOT loses more listeners than it gains. Whether they gain revenue or demo-wise I don't know but their new format sure seems a waste of a great signal.

All it means for me is a couple hours work to create an "smooth jazz" folder on my flash drive for use in the car. Looks like AM/FM/XM are now totally off the radar.

I've heard Whitney Houston's "Greatest Love of All" a couple times already this week, and not even mainstream AC stations touch this anymore. Will they find their (up) tempo? And possibly, creating a new identity instead of using the KYOT call letters won't hurt.

The tightest and most mainstream-sounding Mega's ever been was when they became "Mega" under Carey Edwards in '01.

...or KYOT picking up that mess of a show Art Laboe does every night.

Man, they pitched that show to me hard at Kiss 1230. I'll hand it to him, he never gives up!
