I think it is about time that the Phoenix market got a more Urban Adult styled format. If the African-American population continues to grow in the valley KYOT will probably evolve into an Urban AC format.
The Black population of the Phoenix metro area is something around 5% of the 3 million people living here. I realize that people of other ethnic groups like "urban" music but the number is probably still very small in total. Programming to that niche seems insanity for a station that is not otherwise ethnic-directed. How could an urban format possibly gather more listeners than one which covers a much larger audience?
KYOT's format change (and loss of a well-known brand) still makes absolutely no sense to me (unless, of course, the suits read in the trades the immediate disappearance of the Smooth Jazz format and panicked).
SmoothJazz was more of niche than Urban AC. If you look at statistics Urban AC is one of the most listened to formats in the US. This could ONLY be accomplished by many white & hispanic listeners( We only make up 12% of the total US). Also, if hiphop can cross ethnic lines so can soul and it already has a history of that here in the US. One of these station Mega or KYOT should add new soul to their mix. It would only benefit the one that will take that change , because that will cause at least a 5% uptick over the competition...LOL
