Hal Tatel died, very nice guy and great newsman.KYSN Colorado Springs

I got there in '72. Turcotte was found murdered next to his Porsche south of the Springs one night, Worked with Steve Scott at KEDI-KCMS. Tim Kiley moved to KDZA (or back to KDZA) in the early 70's. Hal was a great guy to hang out with at the station. I remember answering the phones "1460 KISSin Loves You"

Gregor Vaule was the PD at the time and did mornings. Nights was Kurt Grow followed by Gene Austin Knight (Apodaca) and I did the overnights. Tim did mid days and I can't remember the afternoon guy.

It was so much fun to be there when we were number 1.

Thanks for the info.Tom was a very easy going PD and John Lambert was a great Manager.
The Owner at the time is not worth discussing.

What a flashback! I worked at KYSN briefly during early 1971. I did nights and weekends. I had just gotten my first phone from the old Elkins Institute location in the Springs. An ancient Gates transmitter, Gatesway console and a BE 5 deck cart machine (only three decks worked at any one time). Lots of spots, though..we habitually ran 18 minutes per hour, day in, day out. The station was in a little building just south of one of the car dealerships (Phil Long?). One quarter wave tower on 1460, a second, shorter tower for the nighttime DA. It wasn't much, but given it had no competition, it did very well. KEDI/KCMS was trying, but hadn't caught on quite yet. I remember KKFM was the "underground" station on in the Springs at that time.

I remember rewiring the turntables moving the switchs..The chief engineer was a good guy, cant remember his name.

When I was there John Lambert GM.HalTatel news,Gary R,Tim Kiley,Steve Shores,Jon David,Steve Warner Jocks and Tom Turcotte PD.
The owner blew through staff like toilet paper.
The owner reminded me of Liberace.

Not trying to hijack the thread, but I have to mention KKFM! It was 96 and a half in the 70's and we had a great time there. I did mornings one stint, then came back a year later to do a shift, early evenings. When we were in the location before the Academy Road location with the hideous yellow formica, it was cool. 10,000 lp's and very little control from the front office unless you pissed off the fatman, then hell broke loose. The view of the sun coming up, lighting up Garden of The Gods is one that every morning jock should get to see... KEDI-KCMS in 1973-74on the other hand, when it was at 66 Minniehaha was proof that it didnt matter what your studios looked like, or the gear you had, but WHO you had behind the mic. Chuck Browning, Gandalf Grey, Paul (can't remember the last name) a great evening fellow and overnight girl who made that station a great sounding Top 40 programmed by Steve Scott. Anybody who saw that building could not believe that we made it sound that good with what we had. Production in a closet (literally) and a control room that got so cold that we had a space heater under the turntables to keep them from slowing down. But man, we sounded GOOD!

Hijacking the thread is cool.
Colorado had great radio in the 60s.
I left KYSN for California radio and did not think that it was any better.

Paul's air name was Paul Vincent, his real name: Paul Yerrance (I'm not sure of the spelling). The overnight girl's air name was Jennifer Gordon, and her real name: Ilka Denning. I cannot for the life of me remember the real name of Gandalf. There was also a guy named Larry Montgomery, who used his real name on the air.

I remember Paul Vincent followed me at KEDI, and then a couple of years later, he and Dana Boles were at KKFM, and I was brought in to do mornings. Paul was cool dude, with a great set of pipes. I think that the Jennings guy first name on the air was Jack. Mornings on KEDI was Chuck Browning, with the long dark hair that made women swoon. Larry Montgomery also served as the "engineer" which meant he had to drive up Cheyenne Mountain whenever the transmitter went wacko, which was more often than one would have thought. And speaking of KKFM in the old days, anybody know whatever happened to Michael Birdsong?

Wow.
Glad I stumbled across this thread. I worked briefly at KEDI/KCMS in 74 (?) as the morning host. My name at the time was Wes St.John. One of my fond memories was having to stand on the pop crate if you were in bare feet so you didn't get the crap shocked out of you when you turned on the microphone.

One of my minor contributions was wiring the Turn-table remote starts to the channel on switch on the console. Loved the look of the old McMartin Modulation monitors for the FM. Also remember the horrible S/N ratio when the second STL hop would heat up during the summer afternoons. I was only there for a couple of months as I was hired away by the PD at KBEQ in Kansas City. Fun times for a 17 year old radio gypsy.

Great radio history.
Those radio days are gone forever but not forgotten.
C Springs was a great place to be a DJ and the concerts were incredible.
C Springs had a great feel to it.
The KYSN party crasher promotions were incredible.
KYSN was a little station that started the ball rolling.
Thanks for dropping by.
