Enjoy!

She does replace him on the payroll. Nights will not be filled. Just cutting costs. They aren't paying her very much for a major L.A. station.calguy said:kvd08844 said:I've never heard the station, so I don't know of the person you said was replaced. Yvonne Velazquez didn't replace Richard Blade. He was apparently let go because the PD wants to bring in people she's worked with. You know the type. The sad thing is that Richard Blade is a great talent, nice guy and was really good for STAR 98.7. He's been in LA for more than 20 years, most of those years at the World famous KROQ and is a known quantinty in the market/
The smart thing would've been to move Blade to middays and have him do his signature Flashback Lunch. My guess is that she really doesn't want people on staff who know more than she does, she being the PD. That's a common problem in radio. PD's who only want people that don't threaten them with their knowledge. I've worked for a few. One in particular threatened me with the "I've got a hundred guys waiting to take your job" line anytime I gave him a suggestion. Talk about paranoid, and I was on his side at the time...

mostb1 said:Hmm, that's not the reason I heard. But my source only works there and said payroll had nothing to do with it...
As for what she's being paid, STAR still has Jaime to pay-off, but they have the bucks for live deejays in both middays and nights.
The last time they tried this the ratings results were disastrous, but some people never learn from previous mistakes...

The station she worked for here in NYC flipped abruptly on Jan 1, and the staff (other than the morning show) was let go a week before Christmas, I think it was. Connections and networking all being what it is when you need a job.
Seems as though radio is all about cutting costs rather than entertaining people nowadays. Many of the seasoned veterans in this area have had to take jobs at smaller stations just to pay the bills.

Nobody has shown any hate for the new girl. Her coming to STAR has absolutely nothing to do with Blade's dismissal. It's just co-incidence and the connection of the two was started by someone who didn't have the whole story. Ther's no connection between the two day-parts. As for Blade's shift, word from CC Burbank is that someone has already been chosen to do it from a market close to LA who will work for much less than Richard. Plus, as I mentioned before, they're still paying off the seven figure salary of Jamie White, so yes, some of this is budget related.

Again, the shift is going to be tracked not filled. And yes, there is a connection between one coming and one leaving.
Note that Hot is no longer calling themselves "Mega Old School and Today's R&B".
And with all the new CCLA mandates such as you can't talk more than 7 seconds over intros, is it even worth it to have jocks on the air? Might as well have all your stations be like Jack.

You have your opinion, I have mine. This isn't a pi&%ing contest, but my source works at 3400 West Olive. By the way, the new Clear Channel mandates vary from station to station depending on several factors. But yes, most stations will be changing the way they present themselves. And no, I don't think it's for the better. Supposedly these changes stem from research that was done all over the nation, but who knows. Why even have jocks? Well for one, if you do make many of the mandated changes the one thread that remains to identify the station will be the air talent. Also, when these changes fail, they'll need jocks to take the presentation back to where it belongs...

I think we all know the address. Some people even on this board even work there.
Jack doesn't have jocks and has no identity problem. That proves you don't need air talent.
TowerBuzz said:All respect due to Yvonne but she's a CHR/dance type jock. Although Star will never need to have the sort of alternative cred that Kroq's jocks would need, I'm not sure that this hire makes much sense to me. Just a thought but good for her since she was the reason for the legendary Frankie Blue career implosion aircheck!

You know, there was a time in radio when most talented jocks could do more than one format. Seems like now days people think that you can only do one format. Smart program directors in the past could hear a deejay doing one format and recognize his or her ability to transfer their talent to whatever they were doing. True, there have always been air talent that are locked in to one format or another due to their style or personality, but many people are versatile and can do more. I've done AOR-Classic Rock, CHR, AC, Rhythmic Hot AC, and even News Anchoring. Successful deejays are good actors. Nobody ever told Meryl Streep that she can only do one type of role... Pigeonholing someone because of their past format experience is sort of like only thinking "within the box" so to speak. It's typecasting. Bottom line, I would reserve judgment till I heard Ms. Velazquez on air at STAR. At least she actually has experience on-air, unlike some of the market's more recent hires...

Well for starters im not pigeonholing her Im just stating that is what she has done experience wise, it's fact not opinion. I also agree with you that there was a time when talent was talent and jocks could move from format to format because they perhaps had a name for themselves. You're obviously an older jock if you say you have done the formats that you have done because they are of that time when format was not held against you and as you state a smart programmer would take a jock who he/she believed had talent regardless of their past format experience. That is the way it should be but you know that it is not. I didnt make the rules Im just commenting on the reality. Again it should be that way,.........then again you can't tell me that even YOU didnt go "HUH?!!!! when "Poorman" was fired from kroq/loveline years ago and was hired by Power 106!!!
