KYSR Names Yvonne Velazquez For Middays

All respect due to Yvonne but she's a CHR/dance type jock. Although Star will never need to have the sort of alternative cred that Kroq's jocks would need, I'm not sure that this hire makes much sense to me. Just a thought but good for her since she was the reason for the legendary Frankie Blue career implosion aircheck!

Have you ever actually listened to STAR? According to everything I've read, it's classified as a Modern AC station. Do you know what Yvonne sounds like on STAR? I've listened to KYSR's internet stream both before and after Yvonne arrived. How about informing yourself before you express an opinion? How about going to Yvonne's page on the STAR website to find out what her experience has actually been?

And for the record, Frankie Blue was the reason for the legendary Frankie Blue career implosion aircheck. No one put a gun to his head and forced him to go on air in the condition he was in. And he was on like that for at least an hour. I know because I heard the show live.

OH no you are correct sir/or madame, Frankie Blue is a complete half wit who detonated his career on his own. HOWEVER she was the one who was supposed to be on the air that faithful night, after a fight between Frankie and she (in whatever state he was in) she ran out in tears, forcing Frankie to take to the airwaves...........Thus creating the single greatest piece of tape in the history of Marconi's invention. Roll credits Fade to black. While we're on the subject how did that Charise get THAT PD gig in the first place?. SHe is no genius by any stretch.

I don't think I've ever heard this Frankie Blue aircheck... Where can I hear it?

I've never heard of a "sir" named "Kathy" before, but I guess there's always a first time! LOL! My name is "Kathy Cleaning My House in Yonkers," which I had to abbreviate on radio-info. It was my handle as a regular caller on New York's former WNEW Mix 102.7 FM, which was Yvonne's previous station. That having been said, I don't want to hijack the Los Angeles people's corner of this website. If you want to discuss Mix history, including Frankie Blue, how about starting a thread on the NYC board?

The final thing I want to add is that, for the record, your version of the story is not entirely accurate, and differs from published accounts. I do not want the Los Angeles public to be prejuced in its assessment of Yvonne, but rather for them to decide pro or con, based on her talents and entertainment value, and nothing else. Gossip can be a very stinky and ruinous thing.

Concerning Charise and her abilities as a PD (which does concern the LA market), I am not familiar with her. I could tell you all about Rick Martini, but once again, that's a NY topic.

Bearing in mind that I am oriented towards Classic Dance and Rythmic (I'm listening to WKTU right now), I find STAR to be a decent station. I think it has a good sound, i.e., good liners, a fresh concept regarding the intros to new songs, and a good top of the hour ID. My major criticism is that their playlist is too small. I'm also not too thrilled with Valentine's performance on the morning show - something is missing with him. What I think I'm picking up is that it seems like he's acting as if it's all about him. Lisa Foxx seems to be trying to follow his lead, and I think she would do much better with a partner who tries to bring out the best in her (in other words, a real partner). I kinda like Tom Mitchell who follows Yvonne - he's very easy to listen to. I am less familiar with the rest of the dayparts.

How all of this displays Charese's PD talents, or lack of them, is something I really don't know. I am therefore inclined to reserve judgement until I learn enough to make an informed opinion.

She does replace him on the payroll. Nights will not be filled. Just cutting costs. They aren't paying her very much for a major L.A. station.

Looks like STAR quietly hired a night jock. Someone named Summer. Guess they ponied up the cash and didn't track after all...

Wasn't the hire one of the PDs close friends? If so, this wouldn't be the first time this has happened at CC.

Actually it would be the third friend. But anyone in radio knows that this has been happening for years at companies all over the radio spectrum. It's nothing new...

You're thinking of the afternoon guy she hired, a close friend who she had hired in Vegas I think.

Never said it did. Just said it's nothing new and not restricted to just one company.

I don't know if Summer is a friend, but I would guess not. Summer was working the same shift at KCAL-FM in Riverside/San Bernadino and is doing a lot of VO work in LA.

It's indeed sad that Ms. Fruge has chosen to hire friends over some very qualified, heritage names in LA radio who would have done a great job. I know that Richard Blade's firing was a mistake. He could have been a great asset for that station. And there was at least one person up for the midday slot, who many at the station were pulling for, a market veteran with a great following, who was passed over in favor of Charese's friend. A shame.

At this point it looks like Summer wasn't one of the PD's friends. But who knows if she worked with her in the past. Summer comes to STAR from the Inland Empire. Richard Blade's firing was a mistake in my opinion. He's a well known and liked quantity in LA and did many events outside of the station that reflected well on it. From all accounts he was good to work with and a positive influence. The firing may have been motivated by money in the respect that losing his salary and hiring someone else for a lower wage gave them more funds to give to the new midday girl. Or it may have been that MS. Fruge just didn't like him, or felt threatened by his knowledge or stature. It's anyone's guess...
