KYSR SYNDICATES KENNEDY, ADDS TOBI

Two news items from KYSR that have not been discussed on this board yet. KYSR has decided to syndicate the "Music in the Morning with Kennedy" to sister station KRAB in Bakersfield. This ends the syndication of Kevin & Bean:

In addition, former XM Satellite Radio jock Tobi has been added to the lineup.

Why does Kevin & Bean only seem to be a success in LA? They've been dropped from every market they've entered in syndication.

? Kevin and Bean are with CBS Radio.

It still bears substance. CC-Bako can play Kennedy on the cheap from within their own corporate master properties rather than pay syndie monies to CBS for a show that barely plays outside of Simi Valley to the North and the 909 to the West.

Kevin & Bean are niche to Los Angeles and it's always been that way. Bakersfield is a distant rimshot market whose only connection to Los Angeles is the Grapevine that bridges them together. The two markets are diametrically different in just about every way.

This move only goes to prove KRAB has zero interest in doing anything more than being another speaker hole with it's marching orders coming straight from San Antonio.

Oh I see, you're one of these "corporate radio is teh suxxor" people. I've always wanted to ask one of you, since you people hold to the dogmatic belief that corporately owned radio broadcasting is inherently bad and locally owned broadcasting is inherently good, do you apply the same principle to television? Most television that Americans watch is "corporately owned". The only local television broadcasting that survives to a large extent is the news. Is this also evil?

I'm merely stating Clear Channel's motivating factor for every action they make... money. It's cheaper to keep it in house than to pay out to a competitor for programming. It is what it is. It's business. I made no assumptions on local vs. corporate ownership. Having heard KRAB many times I can say without hyperbole that it is a station running on auto pilot. It is neither new nor groundbreaking nor unique. It is a alt rock station like hundreds of others across the country that plays Nirvana on a loop as if it is current. Whether that is because San Antonio programs it that way or the PD at KRAB just has a massive boner for the 90's the fact is the station sounds homogenized and stale like countless others.

Is corporate radio and television as you say "evil"? Not necessarily but it's sure as hell boring.

He's saying that rather than pay CBS to run K&B, they can probably get Kennedy to voicetrack her show up to their sister station in Bakersfield for a lot less money.

Kevin & Bean have been dropped from every market they've been syndicated to. Is it that Kevin & Bean just don't work outside of LA, like John & Ken?

Kevin & Bean continue to run successfully on KJEE in Santa Barbara.

Cudos for having this Bakersfield CC station successfully ripping off the Indie 103.1 logo.
Is Ms. head of the format responsible for that too?

Syndicating a show from your own station to another CC station in the format you are running is no special
news. Ripping off the logo of a station you pretend never existed is not very impressive either.

And by the way, "Adding Tobi" is news only in that the stations intro of Tobi to the website
pretty much reads like "Hi, i'm the new person nobody knows or cares about and hopefully i remember how to run a board". How is that news in LA?

Nice try though.

It's easy to tell when a pd is posting about their own moves.

HAHAHAHAHAHA I wish I was the PD of 98.7!!!! Then there would be an even bigger headline because of all the changes I'd make! I just thought that the addition of Tobi to the 98.7 lineup would be interesting to the fans of Sirius XM's music channels.

Why not? After all, Indie 103.1 was CREATED by Clear Channel.

And when it got really interesting, with the specialty show development and a movement away from the "classic alternative" model, it was no longer in CC's hands. Much of what made Indie legendary, CC had nothing to do with.

For me, Indie was at its prime the year before it went off the air and it dedicated in mashing up music you would normally hear on KROQ or 98.7 with a lot of edgy, good new tracks. The DJ banter was minimal and the commercial load was light.

Kennedy subbing for John and Ken today. She gets a lot of run on other CC stations in addition to KYSR. Of course, she used to share a show on KFI, but that was before she supposedly reduced her workload due to family. Clearly she is a rising star for them.

What do you mean "supposedly"? Do you have a conspiracy theory you'd like to share?

Nah, bad choice of wording on my part. Wasn't intending to suggest anything, although it seems like she works about the same amount now as she did then, just not with shows on opposite ends of the day like she used to have.

I don't listen to her much, but I am a fan of her professionalism and how easily she is a able to move between various formats and topics aimed at different demos, often, I bet, on an ad-hoc basis.
