KYSR TO COUNTRY?

Here's a story just pulled off the website allaboutcountry.com:

Is Clear Channel About To Flip KYSR/Los Angeles To Country?

There are unconfirmed reports circulating on the streets of Los Angeles, and throughout the industry, that Clear Channel will be flipping one of their LA stations to Country, most probably Modern AC KYSR/("STAR 98.7"), or perhaps KBIG. Both stations are in ratings limbo with KYSR currently with a [EDIT]and Hot AC KBIG with [EDIT].

As you know, KZLA/Los Angeles flipped formats back in August to "MOVIN' 93.9," and at the time was sitting at a [EDIT], and was the second biggest billing Country station in the world, in the largest radio billing market in the world. Ultimately, billing will be the deciding factor.

Could it be KYSR that is changing? Program Director Charese Fruge’ just got to the station in May from ALICE in Denver. On the surface, she is Modern AC all the way, but she does have Country Radio experience. Could it be KBIG? Well, Clear Channel does have a few "BIG COUNTRY" stations, like the one about 200 miles North of the "City Of Angels," in Fresno at KHGE. CC also owns AC KOST, so that would be the station that would most likely capture the audience that KBIG might shed if they change. Veteran LA radio superstar Charlie Tuna does mornings on KBIG...could he comfortably segue to Country?

One other point about Clear Channel going Country in LA: Clear Channel has a big resource in Ray Massie, the Program Director at the company's legendary KNIX/Phoenix. The same Ray Massie who had many super successful years as PD of KFRG/San Bernadino. After all, San Bernadino is just a suburb of LA, so it would make sense that Massie would do well in LA, despite the fact that he didn't do so well in San Francisco, after he left San Bernadino.

Why are you starting another thread? There is one below?

It will be interesting to see if this rumor pans out. Seems to me that the same type of situation exists in NYC with a couple of under performing stations.

Yes and no meaning it is not the same situation as LA. Yes New York has some underperformers but New York just is NOt a country town no matter how the country deciples try to spin it. LA being much more suburban, country would have a chance to live there but not NYC. Of course someone probably David Eduardo will now contradict me in a less than polite fashion.

Sometimes it is good to launch a sister station that isnt a threat to exsisting sister stations though, even if ratings are low...better than eating away at the same loaf of bread.

If KZLA was the #2 highest billing station...what is #1?

WUSN, perhaps? (Highest COUNTRY billing station...KZLA was #2. Not overall [or the format would never have been flipped!].)

It is WUSN, with just under $30 million last year. However, this station is down nearly 20% in billing compared with 2003 in a flat Chicago market.

Yes...he did country at KIKF, Orange County for a few years in the 90s.

Personally,i'd rather see one of the(way too many)religious or foreign language radio stations flip to country instead Star 98.7.

But that's just me.

What about non-commerical country?

Why on earth does KCSN Northridge insist on programming classical music daytimes, and roots music nights and weekends? Does the Valley and Santa Clarita need a third classical music station?

Its signal, from North Southwest (AKA the greater Santa Clarita area) thru the while SF Valley, with a booster in West LA, covers much of the LA county demographics that might listen to country.

It could daypart traditional country in the morning, modern country in the afternoon, alt country at night and roots, blues and things like that on weekends. I mean, it's halfway a country sattion already, at night.

Its excellent, awardwinning news department would see its audience multiply geometrically.

Student talent!

Ann The Raven on Saturday nights to talk to lonely, horny cowboys over roots music.

What is "non-commercial"? Never heard of or would care to hear about it. My FM radio dial starts at 92.1. There is nothing below it unless I'm in San Diego.

Confessing your ignorance is no way to win an argument.

Now, do you want to talk about country music or wander off into another ignorant thread hijack?

That is your m.o.. You who posts moronic theory after theory and then can't back them up with proof. You still haven't provided the ratings asked for to back up your last stupid rant.

You are the one off-topic in this thread. We're talking about Clear Channel's highly rumored flip to a country format.

The only radio in Southern California that is the least bit interesting (besides Indie 103 and KKGO) is below 92.1

How can you not to listen to KCRW?

Excuse me, I am talking about country music and L.A. radio and some idiot - for some reason - has to go off on an anti-public radio rant.

Stick to the thread.

I find NOTHING interesting below 92.1. Being that KCRW was the first station I ever worked at I can tell you it's an amateur operation filled with similar programming. KKGO and Indie 103.1 are also a waste on their respective commercial signals. Thankfully I worked for an L.A. commercial FM that dumped classical music not kept playing a loser format.

You stick to the thread. You started with posting some idiotic notion not related to this thread. READ THE TITLE OF THE THREAD MORON. And post those ratings asked for to back up your stupid claims.

I am here to talk about country music, and the realistic chances of it happening in LA. I would personally rather hear a mix of alt country, classic country, and modern country, and think a noncommercial station playing "american" roots music would be pretty damn cool.

Anything KYSR would do would probably be too commercial, too nashville, and would not meet the commercial standards of success that KZLA fell victim to.

Now, do you want to talk more about country radio in LA, and KYSR's possible flip to it?
