KYTX Shameless Self-Promotion!

No doubt you all have heard of the events going on in Tyler regarding a little police standoff for which KYTX broke into regular programming during the day to report on.Less than four hours after the first news, KYTX is now running promos featuring today's incident and bragging about how they were the first on the scene.....Isn't that just utterly shameful?

Haven't seen the promos or the coverage any of the stations afforded the incident. It will be interesting to sample all three newscats as 5, 6, 10, and........and........... to see how each handles what went on. The business of hype hitting the air almost as soon as does breaking coverage is to be sure overdoing it a bit, and it also unfortunately points up the drive among stations in the Tyler market (although the practice is universal to all markets) to outshine, outdo, and out promote the competition. Be interesting to see if the coverage is as timely and complete as the topical promotions that aired.Did the other stations rush to air with promos?

A little off track but for whatever reason KTVT (CBS 11) in Dallas/Fort Worth decided to lead the 5PM news with this "breaking news" incident. The other stations lead with a drowning in a Dallas pool. How the events in Tyler affect us in North Texas have left me very confused. I guess just another excuse to use the copter to cover events outside of the Metroplex.

I dunno.....when KLTV's tower collapsed in February, WFAA and KDFW ran something on the collapse...

Who knows? Sometimes it's just an out-of-market station's way of saying to markets such as Tyler, "We can play in your front yard, too, when we want to." Maybe it's some feeling DFW stations get flying over a scene, as today in Tyler, while the locals are stuck on the ground. A story in Kilgore that went national in 1983 had 4, 8, and 11 flying news crews into Kilgore daily to attend news briefings, and them sort of acting as if the big guys didn't fly in to grace the story with their presence there in reality was no story. One of the chopper pilots landed on a large grocery store's parking lot, the manager complained to the police, and the gendarmes were threatening to impound the helicopter. The story indeed was serious and tragic, but the comings and goings of Dallas news choppers became the talk of the town, often overshadowing the news event itself.Just like Bill Moyers once said, "Life is a media show."

What's wrong with that? The old rule in radio has always been..."tell them what you're going to do, tell them you're doing it, and then tell them what you did."As competitive as the Tyler TV market has become, they all have to try and stand out from the others somehow.
