KYW 1060 HAS NO SHAME

Shamless promos in the AccuWeather forecasts about 1060 offering the music soundtrack for Saturday night's fireworks on the Delaware.

Yes, who ever heard of a business promoting itself. How horrific. ::)

And this is shameful how? Sounds pretty normal to me. It's called horizontal promotion. Promoting things coming up on a radio station. If it's the fact that they're doing it during the AccuWeather forecasts that you think is wrong, I can "kinda" see where you're coming from, however they're probably spinning it in that the AccuWeather forecast will tell you how the weather's gonna be when the fireworks are happening. Sounds logical to me.

I heard those promos too, but so what. Other stations, like WDEL, have paid plugs they insert as they start the Accuweather forecast. What's the difference, a paid plug or a promo plug. It' actually makes sense for a promo or a spot. When is one of the times most people's ears are really listening closely to the radio..... when they hear the sounder for the weather as WDEL uses or the KYW anchor saying and now here's the Accuweather forecast for Philadelphia and the tri-state area. So if I wanted people to really hear my spot plug or the promotion plug that the station is doing, that's a good place to put it.

CBS should carry these on WOGL, not on KYW. It probably sounds pretty terrible on AM.

(Yeah, I know you could listen on FM-HD or online. With music a few minutes behind the fireworks, I imagine).

Can I hear WDEL's AccuWeather sounder on the Web? If so, can you pass along the URL? Here in Boston, WBZ does not use a sounder for AccuWeather. Unless BZ has found that NOT having a sounder increases TSL (people like me, who remind themselves that they have to listen closely to the next weather 10 minutes hence, only to find, after ~11 minutes, that they have missed it again and (after another 10 minutes) again, and sometimes (after yet another 10 minutes) again... again! Very frustrating! Don't know whether a sounder would help, but it might. If it worked, it would, however, cut down on TSL or maybe that should be TS (not really) L.

Dan, I've not seen the sounders listed on WDEL's website, but you can listen online and you'll hear the short sounder as the announcer is saying it's time for accuweather brought to you by, .... During drive time AM they have various sounders for weather, traffic, sports, etc. They all are similar a package if you will, but you get to know which is which. For a medium market station (Wilmington is market #76) WDEL has a very large market professional sound. I don't work there so I'm not tooting my employers horn.

Their website is www.wdel.com. It clues my ear in, yet its not loud and obnoxious, but you hear it. Good luck.
