KYW 1060

Should KYW consider modifying its all news format, to make it sound similar like WCBS, so they can carry the CBS hourly news 24/7, CBS News updates, CBS special reports, CBS radio news long from coverage, airing more reports from CBS 3 and even simulcasting coverage from CBS3 of breaking news events, 60 Minutes, Traffic and Weather together on the eights etc.?

I often wondered why a CBS owned and operated All News outlet was not airing the programs and features outlined above. I believe if the network programming and features were interspersed with current local news programming, KYW will have a well rounded product providing local, regional, state, national and world news from one source.

Perhaps they're more interested in sounding like 1010 WINS.

Considering their relatively consistent placement at or near the top of the heap, no, they don't need to make such a move. ::)

Actually, I think the former all news Westinghouse stations still sound the same. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Give us 22 minutes...

Many years ago, when WCAU tried to be a news station, the approach was similar to what you have today in NYC. 1010 WINS is the "short-form" news station while 880 is more "long-form". They carry the CBS news and features, and Yankee baseball. Both stations are successful.

In Philly, the long-form approach did not really work. KYW continued to be dominate, except when they tried carrying the Phillies. That did not work. 1060 airs the CBS "Face the Nation" program early Monday morning, rather than airing that on 1210. Philly is not a market that would support two news stations and listeners have shown their support for the KYW style. If it ain't broke, they are not gonna fix it!

And you have probably noticed that KYW really carries very little national/world news. While I disapprove of that, there is a growing move toward keeping it local as far as news is concerned. Research may show that people are more inclined to get national/world news from Fox and CNN instead of radio. So KYW pays attention to what Fox/CNN does not.

I would like 1060 and CBS 3 to work together as partners and sharing news resources. As of right now, they don't seem to be IMO. I would like to hear reports from CBS3 on 1060 more often, just like WCBS does with channel 2.

Leave the format the way it is...If there is breaking local news, why wait through three minutes of a national newscast to get to it..

1210 doesn't air CBS, every hour.

WBZ-AM in Boston relegates the CBS TOTH to off-hours and the weekends.

For those who want a network radio newscast hourly, can hear that for most hours of the day on NPR via WHYY-FM 90.9 and WRTI-FM 90.1.

What WDEL does with CBS hourly news is they air the first two minutes and then when the first network spot break happens they cut out and go local. So you get a quick two minute summary of the breaking stories, then live and local for local/regional news to complete their 5 minute news capsule. Maybe that slight tweaking to KYW's top of the hour might work without upsetting the apple cart.

But as some have already said, with KYW being the top of the heap in Philly, why fix it if it ain't broken. One thing that can be said about KYW is you know what you're going to get when you tune in. It's been one of those rare things in life and radio, that doesn't change. There may be a comfort factor for Philadelphian's in that which keeps them coming back to 1060. No gimmicks, just news/info/traffic/weather/sports info/the correct time, etc, all in 22 minutes.

I agree with the bloggers who don't think it needs fixing. With its CBS, ABC and CNN Radio reports, its traffic around the clock, its Accuweather reports and its Harrisburg coverage, it seems pretty thorough. Also, if you really want CBS in Philadelphia, if WPHT-1210 doesn't give you enough you can get WCBS-880.

Do they air TOH news? It doesn't have to be CBS News. It's a CBS owned station in the market that airs national news at the TOH. There doesn't need to be two of those.

Yes, but not every hour.
