KYW Bias Radio

KYW, Philly's radio news monopoly, is showing its biases again - a little more than three weeks before the election.

Incumbent members of congress are taking advantage of their incumbency to make announcements (federal grants, projects, etc) which KYW and other stations report as news, thus skirting equal-time rules. Nothing new there.

But KYW has gone a step further down-playing a local house member's involvement in a scandal getting national play this weekend.
Weldon faces probe on daughter's deals

WASHINGTON (AP) - The FBI is investigating whether Rep. Curt Weldon (news, bio, voting record), R-Pa., used his influence to secure lobbying and consulting contracts for his daughter, two people familiar with the inquiry said Saturday.

The inquiry focuses on lobbying contracts worth $1 million that Weldon's daughter, Karen Weldon, obtained from foreign clients and whether they were assisted by the congressman, they said.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20061015/ap_on_go_co/congressman_investigation_10

Republican Curt Weldon represents Pennsylvania's 7th district in Delaware and Chester Counties. He is in a tight race with challenger Joe Sestak and the race has gotten nasty.

KYW's Sonia Rincon's story avoids saying WHY the FBI is supposedly investigating Weldon beyond a vague reference to "helping out his daughter's business." Instead she mostly gives Weldon's chief of staff a platform to dismiss the issue as "fishy" because the story is coming out before the election.

KYW has always had its pet groups and causes. It is strongly pro-Zionist and anti-Palestinian in its middle east coverage. It is generally pro-business and pro establishment Republican (Union Leaguers).

They've got a hot story here getting national attention. Not as juicy as sending emails to pages but a good influence and abuse of power scandal in the middle of an election campaign none the less. If KYW were as good as their promos claim, you think they'd have been all over this.

This is another example of why for years I have been saying on the boards that KYW NewsRadio 1060 sucks as a news station. The reporting of news stories on the newscasts and the taped/live reports is not very good and not very detailed and bias like it should be. We should really let KYW know how we really feel about this station ( http://www.kyw1060.com/pages/11537.php ) Its a shame that they are getting the top ratings even though their news operation is crap. If WWDB and WCAU-AM was still on the air, they would have been all over this story. Here is the report posted on www.kyw1060.com :
Reports Say Weldon Under FBI Investigation

by KYW’s Sonia Rincon

Is Congressman Curt Weldon under investigation for helping out his daughter's consulting business? If he is, his office says he doesn't know about it.

Published reports citing unnamed sources say the FBI is looking into whether Weldon used his influence to help get his daughter get some contracts, but Weldon's chief of staff Russ Caso says not only is the alleged probe news to the congressman, he believes the timing is a little fishy:

"It's irresponsible for the press to go out there and print the story based on anonymous sources three weeks before an election."

He says there were similar questions about Weldon and his daughter two years ago before the last election, and that his office proactively handed over any evidence to the house ethics committee.

"And the house ethics committee closed the case."

Earlier this week, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee sent out mailers claiming the congressman's daughter got help from her dad. The committee has not returned our calls.

The Inquirer is burying this story, too. So is the Delaware County Times, which serves Weldon's district. It seems this story is getting more attention everywhere else. The people who will vote for or against Weldon may not even know about it.

Here is the McClatchy Newspapers (they broke the story) article which appeared in The Washington Post and other papers around the country, which provides some details and background on the investigation and Weldon's alleged abuses of influence on behalf of his daughter, two Russian companies and two Serbs with ties to a former Serbian president.
Rep. Weldon Probed Over Contracts for His Daughter

The Justice Department is investigating whether Rep. Curt Weldon (R-Pa.) traded his political influence for lucrative lobbying and consulting contracts for his daughter, according to sources with direct knowledge of the inquiry.

In a word: monopoly...

I happen to agree with Fred and Julius on this one. NOTICE HOW I AM AGREEING WITH JULIUS...PLEASE NOTICE THIS. However, this "bias" is not the reason why Julius thinks KYW is a bad station. He's changing his tune once again.

We had it "buried" on the front page.

Really?
I saw the AP story played prominently on Yahoo! News.
In the Yahoo's Local News section (stories fed from the Inquirer), there was nothing about the Weldon story, although your column was featured.

I checked the Philly.com site.
Inquirer home page - Nothing.
Philly.com home page - Nothing (later added to "News Update" section).
Inquirer "Front Page" - Nothing.
Inquirer "Local & Regional" page - Not in "Top Stories;" but down the page in "Other Stories" (number six).
That looks buried to me.

Friday was the debate story plus the North Korea story which gave Weldon - and only Weldon - the opportunity to expound on a major international story and present himself as a policy expert.

Really. It's there. Pick up Saturday's paper in print. Top of the front page, in our news-lead position. 4-line, 36-point headline, plus a deck. Staff-written, too, though it quoted from McClatchy (our former colleagues in our old Washington bureau). We can't be responsible for Yahoo's inability to pick up our stories.

Go to Philly.com and type "Weldon" into the search field. Enjoy.

I'll grant you that there's nothing new in Sunday's paper, but considering the FBI will not confirm anything on the record, that's not surprising that it was too soon for a follow-up.

For all the cries of "liberal Democrats" that we hear at the Inquirer, it's almost refreshing to hear that we're not being aggressive enough against a Republican.

Interesting. As I recall, Saturday has by far the lowest readership of the week. Sunday is the biggie, the issue everybody sees.
Putting it in the Saturday paper is almost burial in and of itself.

But maybe the Sunday news hole was filled with the Big Story that two girl's schools are adjusting OK to having guys around. ::)

Gene Roberts would have had people all over this. It was a different paper - a great paper - in that period after Uncle Wally and before the Ridders started running things.

The news broke when the news broke. The story ran in the paper as soon as it could run, and it appeared online. We have a huge online readership on Saturdays -- in fact, Sunday is not the big online day as print still is. I'm sure you're not suggesting that we should have held the story for Sunday. Then we'd be accused of showboating.
Yes, this is a different world than when Gene Roberts ran the Inquirer. In his day, there was no 24-hour news cycle dictated by the Internet and owners willing to spend a little.

I'm sure someone will be posting a link to the story pretty soon...

On a side note...

This story breaks 3 weeks before a major turning point election. For this to come out now, against a Republican in a dogfight, seems a little suspect to me, and should have the BS Detectors pegging the meter.

Then again, when the chips are down, the Democrats will lie, cheat and steal to win an election.

OK, end political rant....

Rockin' Rob,

With all due respect to you and your current and former friends over on the right-wing Surf Board, if this is made up, why did the FBI raid Weldon's daughter's house?

Before you answer, please keep in mind that a Republican administration, including a Republican attorney general and FBI director, now run the FBI. And they needed a search warrant based probable cause (Republican appointees also dominate the federal judiciary).

FBI raids home of Weldon's daughter

MEDIA, Pa. (AP) - Three weeks before Election Day, an FBI corruption probe involving Republican Rep. Curt Weldon intensified as agents raided the homes of his daughter and a close friend.

Note to Michael Klein:
The Inky seems to have been on top of this story the last few days.
Just wanted to acknowledge that.

You mean lying as in Foley, cheating as in Abramoff, and stealing as in Weldon? I love how it's all some Democrat conspiracy theory, as if the GOP is the only perfect political party who could have never, ever done any wrong. Time to face up to the problems of the party ...

As for KYW, I haven't noticed as much bias as has been brought up here, but I don't listen as much perhaps. Regardless, I think that online media is driving this year's elections and that is an arena that the left owns. Traditional broadcast media is not where it's at anymore.
