KYW on FM HD

Just curious to know if anyone has listened to KYW on WYSP-HD2. If so, how does it sound? On a similar note, has anyone listened to it on 1060 with an HD radio?

I can't lock on to the 1060 HD signal, but WYSP's HD2 sounds great.

I've listened to both. 1060-HD only comes in if I have the radio near the window. HD AM sounds good. KYW on WYSP-HD2 sounds even better. I listen at home. Frank sounds good on 1210-HD. I need an HD radio in the car. I can't tell you how many times I flip over to 1060 on the 2s and there is a lot af static from PSE&G wires. Why is 1060 so bad under power lines in Camden County?

Do you think that maybe their 1060 AM transmitter needs to be replaced because of the signal problems with KYW.

Got an HD for Christmas, and KYW on AM sounds great (same for 1210, no more static during coast to coast, woo!). My first impression was that the audio was similar to an internet stream, though it is somewhat clearer. KYW on WYSP is on a delay of around 20 seconds though.

I've been quite pleased with the mobile coverage of the KYW simulcast on WYSP's HD-2 in central Chester County. Finally, someone at CBS figured out that multicast channels need to offer worthwhile content; low budget, computer jukebox garbage isn't going to work.

KYW's AM digital coverage in this area is poor due to power line interference, no less of a problem over here in PECO territory. The AM IBOC system just doesn't provide sufficient noise immunity to deal with impulse noise of this magnitude. The constant blending between digital and analog is annoying; and KYW's analog audio quality took a big cut when the low-pass filter was turned on. At night, KYW's digital signal is useless here.

Meanwhile, WYSP recently moved their main transmitter to the new American Tower site, and they are now using the ERI master FM antenna at 1320 feet AMSL for both analog and digital. The ERP is less than at the previous "Banks Tower" site, but they gained over 200 feet in elevation, which seemed to make a noticeable improvement in the outer suburbs. This should make KYW's programming easier to receive in Bucks County.

As most of you realize, KYW's AM directional pattern, which protects 1050 in New York, greatly limits coverage to the northeast. KYW actually has a lower effective field between 60 and 85 degrees (towards lower Bucks) than 5 kW WNAP, just up the pike in Norristown, despite the fact that KYW has ten times the transmitter power and the added efficiency of halfwave towers.

On a similar note, why doesn't KYW turn off the HD for 1060? Since anyone with an HD radio can listen to 94.1HD2, why not let those without an HD radio hear KYW without the iboc hash?

I agree with you.

Better yet, why not buy a decent Internet Radio and hear KYW in excellent quality at a great bandwidth ... and WPHT, as well, plus the 'YSP HD-2 if need be (you won't) ... and get the other 38,000 stations-between-the-stations.

No one except radio geeks cares about nulls, degrees of coverage, towers, patterns, IBOC or coverage. They care about hearing the content in clear, well-defined audio, with compelling content. It's not about replacing a million-dollar 50kw AM rig. It's about us listening to the best radio can give ... in content and programming.

I listen to KYW in California and am amazed that we're still arguing as to why the degree of pattern nulls, poor ground, etc. really doesn't matter ... when for $150 bucks, you can get it all and more. Much more.

KYW has put a lot into its streaming and it sounds outstanding.

Does this $150 "decent internet radio" work in your car? Does it come free with mobile internet service?

KYW in the car? Who does that? KYW is really more of a listen while your on the beach laying in the sun type station. I know my family always has it blasting at family BBQ's.

The answer, aindik, is "Yes." Moreso, everyday! Also, there are 10,000 stations between the stations. Not the same old drivvle like, listening to KYW in the car except for traffic and weather on the 2s... I get a lot of wireless hotspots on my drive and unlimited cell plans aren't all that bad these days. Wait till you get a Synch with a new Ford ... great stuff! Better than HD by a long shot.

While it's a bit more than $150, I plan on using my iPhone as a mobile internet radio when I make that purchase in two weeks. It's possible now through a little finagling, and it's going to be possible for common users once third-party software comes down the pike.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - what you have to keep your eyes peeled for are devices that people already own that will become capable of being an internet radio. Stuff like cell phones, PDAs, and gaming devices. Heck, the PSP game system added Live365 support with their last firmware update. What do you think will happen when cell phones and other mobile electronics start to get on board with the google third-party software parade?

Suddenly, everyone that has a cell phone (read: pretty much everyone) is also holding a free alternative to terrestrial, HD, and satellite radio.

Check out the new "Fly Tunes" vid on YouTube from the CES in Vegas. For the iPhone, it's free and looks pretty slick. Seamless with the Safari browser.

That is pretty tight. I like that it caches the station for you - so if you're on a crap connection, it's like a pre-buffer that allows you to listen uninterrupted.
