KYW-TV In A Pickle Regarding Weekend Sports Anchor Position

KYW-TV News Director Susan Schiller has had to wipe the egg off of her face after trying out a potential candidate for the vacant weekend sports anchor job. From DCRTV.com:

"Kristen Berset, who has anchored weekend sports at Sinclair flagship WBFF-45-Fox in Baltimore for the past 18 months, auditioned for the weekend sports vacancy... [The] tryout went well. Until News Director Susan Schiller "Googled" Berset and found a treasure trove of slinky bathing suit photos that Schiller felt were inappropriate for a "legitimate" journalist..."

Did I mention that Berset was a former Miss Florida? You have to start somewhere, I guess...

But wait, there's more! Schiller eventually offered the job to the station's weekend morning news anchor Lesley Van Arsdall, who also has some experience under her belt working the Eagles sideline on KYW-AM:

"According to insiders, Schiller told Van Arsdall, "The job is yours. Just don't screw it up." Guess what? Van Arsdall says she's leaving on maternity leave in the middle of football season."

LOL!

What "egg?" Someone got a tryout, and they decided--for whatever reason (agree of disagree with it)--not to hire them. That's the nature of hiring people. As for someone scheduled to go on maternity leave...again, so what? They'll cover. Here in the modern world, people have children.

They could just get Jamie Smith to cover. I know he filled in before.

"Legitimate" journalist?" Come on now, that term no longer even applies to local TV news broadcasts, and hasn't for almost 15 years. On air folks are teleprompter readers disguised as entertainers. Simply another disingenuous, insulting to one's intelligence statement from a self-absorbed news director placing more importance in what they do than is reality to the majority of people. Oh, and by the way, anyone in the position of hiring in today's digital world ALWAYS goes to social media/other digital resources BEFORE bringing a candidate in for an interview/tryout (whatever) if they're worth their weight as a decision-maker. It's cardinal rule #1 today. This was ABSOLUTELY an egg-on-the-face moment for this news director, and anyone who tries to pooh-pooh it as no big deal is also being disingenuous, especially those that think local TV news is an enjoyable way to spend precious time in one's life. Enjoy.

And who says a former Miss Florida can't be enough into sports and broadcast journalism to report sports on local TV? If you are good-looking, does that automatically mean you're not bright enough to be on TV?

I believe having good looks is a prerequisite to being an anchor on Fox News. ::)
