Which they should stop doing now.

Let's see, what's that old saying? "Stop beating a dead horse?"

The sports, business reports, fluff stories, weather are all recorded and broadcast over and over. You don't need a live news reader to intro and outro them except for the top and bottom of the hour. The traffic every 10 minutes is live. Hey, they even give time-checks in the recorded segments. The only thing missing? The current temperature except at the two live segments. The normal non-radio geek listener dos not know the difference and certainly does not care.

And the importance of this? KYW only had to eliminate two positions instead of four. So Julius, if you want to see more people at KYW hit the unemployment line, keep begging them to be live over night. There will be more part timers (i.e. no benefits) and still fewer full time staffers. Go live at night and the overall quality of the most expensive format on the radio goes down, decreasing revenue even more.

I live in New York and listen to WINS, so I can provide some info on that. I listen to WINS on the overnights a couple of times per week and I believe they are live and local. There is interaction between the anchor and the traffic reporter (which is from MetroTraffic if I am not mistaken,as the traffic reporter is also heard on other stations in this market). This interaction suggest they are live as they are talking about what is happening at that precise moment. There is plenty of breaking news, and of course, the occasional error.

Again--people are on duty 24/7 at KYW. There just aren't as many as there used to be in the overnights. Headline News has done this for years--much of the stuff on HN after the :15 is taped. If there's a live anchor at the top and bottom during overnights and the features, etc. are taped, it is NO BIG DEAL. Someone is there should there be breaking news and I'm confident others are on call to come and assist if that be the case. The people bitching about these segments being taped obviously don't work in broadcasting and don't have any concept of how to run a newsroom. As a previous poster said, there could have been four people canned instead of the two who volunteered to retire when CBS decided to cut its budget.

This is a non-issue.
