KYXY decline continues

Since we can only see the total numbers, this is subject to the usual "well those numbers have nothing to do with real world ad sales" comments.

But KYXY continues to trend downwards in the latest numbers, with the past six books looking like this:

9.7 6.2 5.4 5.1 4.8 4.7

KUFF-MUB EFF-EM looks like this:

3.8 3.4 4.1 4.4 4.9 4.8

And maybe KSON should not have been so fast to hire a new morning team:

3.8 3.6 3.8 4.4 3.7 4.7

3787: to answer your question about a KBZT format "flip," the lyrics to an old TV theme come to mind:

They call it Flipper, Flipper, Flipper
Faster than Lightning
No one can see, He's smarter than me....

It's really very, very sad. Mixing the Mikey show with this great music station was like mixing Harry Reasoner and Barbara Walters....or Jay Leno and prime time....or the measles and the Aztecs....or firewater and the Injuns...George Bush and Dan Quayle...or a nice corn-studded turd that floats and an otherwise delightful punchbowl full of punch.

Now they have KIFM to compete as well, since KIFM is this "Smooth" format which is really a new name for the "Soft-Rock" format.

However, I am really digging the 80s weekends.

Nice pull.

It is about the music ...

Last night I was listening to Magic and it sounded more like the KyXy of 10 years ago than it did what Magic is supposed to be.

Five downward trending months.

Five months of Jeff & Jer.

Hmmm....I see a pattern.

KyXy came up in the last ratings, but did the morning show?? It wouldnt suprise me if the station came up and J&J went down!

KyXy always had a good formula. Play the music and read the tired old liners from 10 years ago, and the women loved it! They took away the music in the mornings and their regular people now they have a worn out old talk show that nobody wants! Sofie would have been a better match for J&J not Mike O'Brian!!

I think they should put KYXY back where it was and reassemble the old on-air team right where they were. The ONLY reason KYXY hired Jeff and Jer is they told Bob Bolinger they were offered a gig at KPRI and Bolinger believed it. The truth is, all KPRI offered them was profit sharing which is really only what they are worth. Bolinger was worried that J&J on another station would take away from KYXY's AC prominence. Little did he know that hiring J&J would actually lower KYXY's standing. Good move Bob!

Bob is a good man and a good GM. I am sure that with his and J&J's track record that he thought he could get higher ratings with them (like he did on 94.1, 106.5, 100.7). But KyXy was the wrong station for it. We all make mistakes, its a shame KPOP is not still around J&J would be great filling in on mornings substituting for someone like Charlie and Herrigan (when they go on vacation) LOL.

Bob IS a good man. Especially compared to people like Mike Glickenhaus and Jack Evans....oy vey.

But he bought J&J's lie that they were about to go on KPRI. Which may have been true but only on a profit sharing basis. But Bob let CBS down when he fixed a station that wasn't broke just to make room for these used-to-be's. He did not do due diligence to research this KPRI "offer." oooops! Plus, the fact that KMYI went UP after J&J left should have some kind of clue, don't you think?

And Star became a better profit center for CC San Diego after JJ and the 'gram left.

But before they got there "My 941" was just floundering in the ratings, Bob and J&J got the ball rolling. Jimmy Steele made the station relevant without J&J.

You are making a causal connectionn to a correlative result. All of radio grew at the same time J & J came to KMYI. The problem is, the "stars" convinced management THEY were the causal connection.

J & J are a current ratings sink-hole and have been for the past few years. KMYI saw this, and now KYXY is experiencing the sad result of anachronistic programming.

Old talent seldom fades away gracefully....J & J ae the Willie Mays of radio.

Please do not compare J&J to Willie Mays. Just the other day Vin Scully said on KABC that his favorite player of all time was Willie Mays. Both of these greats are quasi-spiritual to a lot of us, and you just took the name of them in vain. Seriously, Willie Mays is huge and J&J are expendable, meaningless and scammed (lied) to get their current job at KYXY. I think the best thing is let Bob B. find a respectable way to get them out. But make no mistake, it was Bob who made this mistake. All he had to find out that their only offer was to work on a profit sharing basis.

Hey, and speaking of profit sharing, please read the new folder I'm going to create right now.

With utmost respect, I apologize. I was referring ONLY to Willie from the Mets. Wille from the Giants was the greatest player ever to play the game in that era -- or mayber ever!
Wait! That comment renders my J & J analogy to Willie totally inaccurate. To fall from grace requires one to be at the pinnacle. "Statler & Waldorf" fall FAR short of the dominance of Willie Mays. Mea Culpa!

Rdowd you are a good sport. Youcan fun with this silly blog. You're a lot better natured than some of the other snippy, bitchy people who participate.

Thank you. That's because I do not know, nor pretend to know, much about radio other than what sucks for entertainment. The stilted, "dirt on the 20's," "stupid news," and music that causes one to wretch, adds up to a large, "we can't wait to retire" suckfest.

Plus, I seldom get offended when someone disagrees with my analysis of stuff.

As a J&J listener for years, I think that they are, indeed, ready for retirement. It's evident in Jerry's lack of engagement and Jeff's forced ebullience. And Laura has been annoying for years...

Having said that - I missed them when they were gone. Why? Because there are no other family-friendly morning shows out there that are appropriate for whole-family listening in morning drive. Not Mikey, not Mark & Brian, not the circle-jerk on Rock 105, certainly not the scatological DS&T. On the news side, KFMB and KOGO are schmoozefests, Handel is not but is certainly not family-appropriate, and KNX is just plain boring as sin.

Until such time as something better comes along, I really have no alternative for morning listening.
