KYXY, KFMB-FM, KCBQ-FM

Hey Guys:

I was wondering if you all can help me with exact sign on dates for the stations:

1. KFMX to KYXY in 1971?

2. KFMB-FM Beautiful Music to Top 40?

3. KCBQ-AM-FM Country to Oldies?

Thanks for your help.

TJ:

The last reference I can find for KFMX in Billboard is March 20, 1971...the first for KYXY is December 4, 1971...so there's the window.

KFMB-FM became B-100 in March, 1975...I believe it was March 1. I was in the market, listening at the time.

Billboard reported KCBQ-FM's flip from Country to Classic Rock as "Eagle 105" in the December 20, 1986 issue.

I distinctly remember Eagle 105 (KCBQ) as oldies from 1986 to 1995.
They changed their slogan in 1988 to "The Legendary KCBQ", but
they were still playing the same oldies.Billboard could be confusing
KCBQ with KLZZ when they briefly tried classic rock before flipping to
KKLQ (Q106). Eagle 105's slogan used to be "The Greatest hits of all time."

Looking at that article a little further, it refers to KRTH a "rock classics" station, and
K-Earth was oldies since the early 1980's. (Just a little goof on Billboard's part.)

There was also KXGL ( I believe) The Eagle that was on 94.1 and was owned by Nationwide and programmed by Larry Bruce and was sort of a hybrid classic rock / oldies. It didn't last too long ...I think '95-97

Yeah.
I really didn't understand what the point 94.1 "The Eagle" was for going with the Rock and Roll Oldies. At the time, there wasn't m uch difference between Rock Oldies, Classic rock and Classic Hits, so San Diego had 94.1, 103.7, 101.5 and 102.9 all playing the same music (I'm not sure if 105.3 pre-Sets FM) ever overlapped 94.1.

Later I found out that Nationwide bought KGB, raided them for staff, then spun off KGB and started Eagle, so I guess that was the reason behind it. We always thought the way they pronounced "The Eaaaagle" was kind of a joke.

Hey Guys:

Thanks for all of your help!! Garrett mentioned SETS-FM 105.3. I wanted to ask would anybody know when in November 1995 KCBQ went from 70's 80's oldies to AAA "Sets-fm"?

Garrett: the only diffrence between Classic Rock and Classic Hits is that the "Hits" stations don't go deep into the classics but they do repeat the same songs over and over again. Ex: You would here Fleetwood Mac's "The Chain or Gold Dust Woman" on Classic Rock stations but never on Classic Hits stations. To me the Classic Hits format was done totaly wrong. When I was working at 94.3 the beach in West Palm Beach we were a classic hits station but we played everything from Pop to rock to R&B and disco including The Chain and Gold Dust Woman. Sort of like the old Top 40 am of back in the day.

Thanks
