Eric,
I have listened to the station off and on since it went country about a year ago. I do not know this Don Palmer person. The only info I know is what I have read in the paper. Big splash about all types of sports programming, Walker Johnson, etc. Then he disappears off the map. Again, I am an casual observer of this station.
I commute weekly to Atlanta and points south of there. I listen to all the stations up and down 1-75. About 93.5 being off the air, Friday night (on my way into town)thru Monday Morning (leaving town), all I got was dead air. Not studio dead air but transmitter dead air. I know the difference. Could be fixed now, I can't tell. (This week I have made a detour to deep south Alabama, so I am out of range. Will be back Friday night)
I don't think the station has any staff. I have heard Tonya on and off this station over the past two +/- years. Great talent wasted on this station.
No other talent that I know of. I never hear anyone in the afternoon or early evening slots. They do have some type of sports show on during the week at night. (I get more than enough sports programming traveling around the south, so i really have no interest in local high school sports. That is a personal reflection, not a reflection on their programming)
From reading in the paper, I believe a family member (son? or nephew?) was running the station. Much like Don Palmer, he could be next to me at the mall and I would not know him. From the lack of commercials I am hearing now, this person must have done a good job. I hear no sponsorships, billboards, few commercials, so billing has to be down from when this person was in charge. Don't know.
As for the WLIL-AM 730. Same stuff. Different Day. Has not changed in the 12 years I have lived in Knoxville. I do love this little AM. (BTW, I love small town am stations, especially ones that do a great job: WYSH in Clinton and WYXI in Athens. There is another small am in North Georgia in Gilmore County that I love. Real high dial spot, cant remember the call letters)
