KZBB B98

It seems like nobody in Fort Smith surfs this board, or it would have been reported already. KZBB B-98 went Hot AC from CHR a few weeks back. I knew that if KBBQ survived as rhythmic "The Vibe", one of the existing CHRs was going to have to go. Anybody else notice that The Vibe is edging slightly more mainstream since B-98 flipped?

i mentioned something about it back on october 12th in the NW arkansas thread below; only to be corrected that fort smith is not northwest arkansas. being from little rock, that's news to me.

but yeah, b98.5 is hot a/c.

the 'rhythmic' station started edging mainstream before b re-formatted.

fred baker is probably laughing at all of this.

I think you meant to say B-98. B-98.5 is in LR. And, for the record, I now live in Northwest Arkansas, but I'm FROM South Arkansas and Fort Smith is in the River Valley not Northwest Arkansas.

yes i meant b98.

whatever about northwest arkansas. i got the state right. it's off I-40. next to oklahoma. i lived in fayetteville in college. i guess once you get on 71 or 540 you're in "NW Arkansas".

i would rather be in SE Hawaii.

nevertheless, i hear radio is just pitiful up in that part of the state, at either end of I-540. pick a location and tell us about it.

Like you, I lived in Fayetteville during most of my college experience. I don't see why so many people get their boxers in a bunch over whether Ft. Smith is in Northwest Arkansas. Yes, it's the River Valley, but could the River Valley also be in Northwest Arkansas? I don't know. It's bizarre to me. They're the same TV market, and you can hear a substantial number of Ft. Smith radio stations in Fayetteville and vice-versa. KEZA is even licensed to Fayetteville and tries to serve Ft. Smith. KISR 93.7 had a button on my radio as did KZBB, which wasn't CHR when I was there. KMAG and KTCS were listenable in Fayetteville as was KBBQ after it moved to 100.7. 107.3 also put a decent signal into Fayetteville, though I can't imagine why anyone would have listened to it as KBSY or in its Christian country format that simulcast KPRV. I also had no trouble getting most of the Joplin stations and the class C's from Springfield in Fayetteville.

I was in Fayetteville in late September, and I didn't find the radio dial to be pitiful, though I didn't find myself raving about it either. It seemed relatively average for a market of that size to me.

The Fort Smith dial isn't as pitiful as its made out to be. It just doesn't have any real good personalities. Most of the stations are completely automated. And of course "The Vibe" was going to have to edge mainstream to survive in a market with an african-american population as low as Fort Smith has. The massive-growth of UAFS plus the Hurricane Katrina evacuation of many people to Ft. Smith is probably why we got a rhythmic in the first place.

And NWA doesn't like Ft. Smith to be considered part of NWA because they are experiencing the massive population growth and we aren't. NWA really needs a rhythmic/urban format. It suprises me they dont have one with the University there plus the massive influx of people and culture.

Have you looked at the demographic breakdown of Northwest Arkansas? The percentage of the population the format would target isn't significant enough to warrant it.

young people who like hip-hop and r&b?

(me playing devil's advocate ;))

I was thinking the same thing.

Having worked at a former life of b98/KZBB (formerly KZZB/Z98, formerly KLUP...gospel, formerly KLCO...top 40), Fred was our man to hate. Now that I've been in PA for almost 2 decades & have looked back at the Ft. Smith market, Mr. Baker is the man to respect. He's survived the CC's and the Cumuluses. He's doing local radio the right way.

Has he given away any more houses for radio contests?

or corvettes? (find the "R" - win our car) "K-I-S-_" - we've lost our "R". If you can find it, you'll win our car. It's a shiny new 'Vette"!

don't think fred will ever do that again.

yeah, i can hear him laughing now...

;D

Poor B98 they never had a chance...the good thing is that baker is number 1 the sad thing is that for the corporate stations in town they are pretty much tax write off's. But also who thinks it's cool to have a bee represent a station?

I was hired when they began the whole "Bee" thing. That was years and years ago.. 1985.

It was pretty cool at the time. A strong image and great sales department.

...and, during the two years I was there, we kicked KISR's butt. But I highly respected Fred (and had worked with him when he assisted KELI/Tulsa with some promotions).

It is pretty amazing they still use the same Bee graphic after all this time.

I have to say....B98 sounds pretty good these days. The music is the strong point right now. Imaging is a little blah, but it is not a tune out. Plus, they have Willie Stevens (morning guy at B back in the 80's) on
V-tracking mid days.
