KZDC 1250 San Antonio Heard In... Alaska!

Yeah, I wouldn't have believed it myself if I hadn't heard the legal ID!

I'd heard sports on 1250khz in and out Tuesday evening January 9th and I dont have internet access at my DX point from any wifi and our cell network here is 2G, so no mobile broadband. I texted a friend and had him look it up.. and one of the only hits we came up with was KZDC as a possibility. I thought... "No way!"

Well at 8pm AK, 10pm mountain, 11pm central I heard "KZDC San Antonio" in the mire of the ether 3200 miles away!

TEF6686 radio, 15 ft Wellbrook Loop and DXEngineering preamp.,

Did you happen to try 550? 1250 uses the KTSA 4 tower array for nighttime operations. That's a pretty impressive haul for less than 1kW at that part of the dial.

I have a 550 in anchorage

This is impressive. Congrats Paul! KZDC has been heard here as well in WA, but only once I believe.

Very impressive indeed. I'm 200 miles east of San Antonio and KZDC is rare here - they have a nighttime null in my direction.

Have to wonder if KZDC was on its day site, as that is 25kw with a major lobe aimed NNW. The licensed night signal is 920 watts with a secondary lobe also aimed NNW.

I honestly cant say what they were operating with.. propagation up here is.. very very strange.

How good is that TEF6686 compared to what else you have? I’ve seen some YouTube videos and it looks impressive.

It doesnt have USB and audio only goes down to 3khz.. every other radio i have goes to 1khz audio bandwith... im not to upset about no usb, but i wish the audio was narrower.

This does have some issues if you have a signal thats uber uber strong and or with uber uber wide audio, next to a weaker signal... BUT.. i was a tecsun pl880 fan boy for the longest time.. love it, great audio selectivity and sensitivity.

The ATS was better than that and the tef is better than the ats

When i get around to posting my audio recording, itll surprise you even more. Though, as most who know me.. know my processing of my audio clips can be 1-2-3 months behind the original logging.

Thanks. I might grab one. My best radio now is the old Sony ICF-2010, which is a gem, but doesn't get to 3 khz bandwidth. (And with a Mac, looks like SDR options are really limited.)

buy it on aliexpress from a us based seller

ive had a few from overseas sellers on ebay and china be duds for various reasons

theres copies of copies of copies out there
You want the long rectangular silver one

New member here, but not new to DXing. Imagine all have heard of the National Radio Club and their DX News. Am a member, get the e-pub a couple of times a month.

Waving from Maydelle,,

Remember, 1250 is closer to the top of the dial and that is where the shortwave phenomenon kicks in.

I forgot to post my audio, oops!

The legal id is at 14 seconds in, semi clearly heard is KZDC San Antonio... the signal is a bit iffy but starts picking up slowly but surely but.. BUT.. fast forward to 2 mins 30 seconds and it gets incredibly good
