KZL Stunting.....

From the KZL website

It has come to our attention that the Murphy in the Morning Show MAY have engaged in an illegal phone call during their show today. These allegations are being taken very seriously and we are launching an internal investigation into the matter. Until this matter is resolved we are suspending all the members of the Murphy in the Morning Show including all Murphy in the Morning Show content indefinitely. We hope to resolve this matter quickly and appreciate your patience during this investigation.

Bruce Wheeler
Vice President & General Manager of Dick Broadcasting

NICE! "investigation".

Bob Dumas special anyone??? Guess Murphy needed a couple of days off, so they did the ole' suspension gimmick. Does that still woik? Maybe he'll be wearing suspenders and a halfa barrel at the end of it??? ahhaahahahhaahhahaaha!!

KZL's morning show started a new game this moring called DO or Die. Basically they had females in the area write in and tell why they wanted their boyfriend to propose to them. They chose one and the deal was they would call her boyfriend and explain that if he agrees to propose the show will give them $1000 toward their wedding or whatever they wanted. If he didn't agree to propose the girlfriend had to end the relationship. Do or Die. They called this guy and he was pissed that his girlfriend put him on the spot and embarassed him on the radio for everyone to hear. He said they would talk about it privately and that the show should be ashamed and appologize for playing this game and doing this to him. So they flat out asked him if he was willing propose and he said not right now but they could talk about it later. So they considered that he didn't propose so the ralationship was over. After he hung up on the the morning show they told the girlfriend to call back tomorrow and let them know what happened. I guess that wont be happening though.

I don't really agree with what they did....seems like that's just asking to screw up someone's life but I dont konw if calling someone is actually illegal. Maybe they could get harrasment charges out of it. I dont know. But I just wanted to give the background to todays announcement.

But as you said...i'm sure JM is happy to have a paid vacation.

Could this be that the boyfriend was put on the air without his consent? I would be upset with that as well if it were me.

If this was the case, it would be like recording a phone conversation. All parties have to agree to have a phone conversation recorded at the very beginning.

Not true in all states. In some, like mine, just ONE party has to consent. (Of course, that's just the RECORDING; the BROADCAST is another matter entirely...)

(sorry, i don't normally do this)

COME ON PEOPLE! IT HAPPENED ON A THURSDAY!

WISE UP! IT'S A STUNT!

It has to be a stunt.....I don't see where what they did was illegal. The boyfriend could've easily hung up......nobody HAS to stay on the air with a bunch of wise butts like us!!

Tomorrow morning there will be recorded messages from the GM running apologizing and telling the loyal fans to listen at a specific time for details about the fate of our heros. Bank it. I'm never wrong.

Sniff..you could be on to something, but since dittohead agrees, I'm not sure.

what ever the case. tv has been all over the story...so mission acomplished.

sure will be fun when PPM hits and you'll actually be able to see if people tune in to see what happens with these kind of stunts.

sort of like when they turned off oldies 93 and played the computer voice....it was annoying, but you had to keep checking back to see if it was still going....

Here is some radio 101. If your morning show is "under investigation" it wont be announced on the air. C'mon people. You cant really believe this "story". It's the fall book, trying to generate talk...guess what? They are. Maybe next they'll "Flip formats" and go to Punk Country.

Bruce Wheeler is a decent man but he has never had an original idea in his life. Bet everything you have left in the stock market that this is a stunt that has been researched for ten weeks before it was rolled out. Murhpy should be embarrassed he can't come up with something better. Bob Dumas eats that guy for breakfast when it comes to creativity.

Actually, I think Bruce Wheeler is very creative. I think it's Murphy that isn't. He out aged that format 10 years ago. Even though it is a stunt, it would be good to have a shake up over there. But, he is so close to Wheeler, and Dick that he wont be going anywhere. They will all probably sell/leave at the same time.

State laws do not apply here.

The FCC rule prohibit putting someone on the air without their permission. Since the station called the man, they had the burden of asking his permission BEFORE putting him on the air. If though the man could have hung up at any time, it is doubtful that he gave his permission.

Yeah, he aged out the format alright...#1 25-54 in the morning..yeah that sucks.

Bob Dumas has never achieved the ratings success that Murphy has right now.

It isn't about being "creative" it is about being effective and guess what genius..this worked so who cares how creative you think it is.

This event has been a well executed stunt and you should congratulate them.

I think I finally see what this particular board is about: Jealousy.

Most of you wouldn't give credit where credit is due if it killed you.

and let me go ahead and jump the gun on your responses:

Oh you must work for Dick
Oh you must know Murphy
Blah blah blah...............

Murphy is on a roll right now and I'll be the first to say...good on you man.

I report.....you decide!

Sounds like you already decided too, eyewitness news. :'(

Decided we are all wrong about Murphy's lack of creativity, we're jealous, and you want to bust on us because we don't worship the #1 25-54 Murphygod like you do man.
Relax, don't get too embroiled with the radio gods, they will only let you down. They will change formats, lose their creativity (might have already happened), move on (or in this case die off), or whatever but they won't be there forever. :'(

you do have to admit one thing... nobody's talking about Roper at TQR, at the moment.

Well, for those of us who still work in the business ratings matter. Last time I checked advertisers don't place buys on who is the "most creative". They buy results.

The other potential downsides have always existed in one form or another. You accept that when you get into the business and learn to deal with it.

Doesn't mean you give up..or in some cases I guess it does.

Anyone who has spent time in the business has been let down and screwed at some point......some learn how to deal.

I stand by my statement. This was effective. And just because it's been done before is irrelevant. You don't have to re-invent the wheel all the time to please the "creative" police.

Results matter more than conversations about how lame it is.

A great manager I worked for once always said, before you critize, come up with a better way to do it.

So........how could the Murphy stunt have been more "creative"?
