KZLA Goes Dance and Rick Dees?

Movin 93.9, the Mix that makes you move...

Rick is back.

It is the "Movin" format from Alan Burns that is already on in Seattle.

obviously no one saw this coming...
when's the launch (or have they already flipped)?

I would hardly call this a dance station. Its an Adult Rhytmic Top 40 with plenty of 80's/90's oldies leaning heavily towards attracting Hispanic females.

Nice processing. Moderate to Heavy compression. Very loud.

How is this going to fix the mess that Emmis currently has with their sister station, Power 106? Most direct station that Movin' is targeting is Hot 92 Jamz. For dance music, it's hipper than KBIG during the day so far.

I would guess that they can much more easily sell this in combination with Power.

(Los Angeles) Emmis Communications and Dees Entertainment have announced the launch of a new Los Angeles radio station, Movin 93.9, effective today, Thursday August 17. Movin 93.9 represents a new format in the Los Angeles market, Rhythmic Pop Contemporary, which will feature the music of artists like Beyonce’, Gwen Stefani, Usher, Jennifer Lopez, Black Eyed Peas, Madonna, Janet Jackson, and Gnarls Barkley. Movin 93.9 is “The Mix That Makes You Move.”

Legendary Los Angeles radio personality Rick Dees will be joining Movin 93.9 as live morning host. Dees was last heard in Los Angeles in 2004 as one of L.A.’s top-rated hosts. “The Rick Dees Weekly Top 40” show is syndicated to 125 countries worldwide, with an audience of millions.

“We’re overjoyed that Rick Dees will be joining Emmis Communications and Movin 93.9,” said Jimmy Steal, Emmis Communications VP of Programming. “Rick’s passion for Los Angeles’ morning radio is legendary and his live & local show is a perfect fit for Movin 93.9. We can’t wait for him to start! He’s the perfect compliment to this exciting new format,” Steal added.

“Emmis is the perfect fit,” said Rick Dees. “I’ve been presented with many opportunities, and the new Movin 93.9 gets me excited like I’ve never been before! We will have an All-Star team ready to deliver a great morning show for Southern California.”

Emmis Radio Division Val Maki said, “This is one of the most exciting opportunities we’ve seen in any radio market. The potential audience has told us that they want something new and fun. The combination of this music and Rick Dees make this the perfect answer to the needs of the marketplace. We are privileged to launch this station and I applaud the entire team.”

Movin 93.9 replaces Country 93.9 KZLA. KZLA continues to be available to fans via Internet streaming as well as on Movin 93.9’s HD Radio side channel. Information concerning KZLA Internet streaming and HD Radio side channel is available at www.kzla.com.

Movin 93.9 is owned and operated by Emmis Communications (EMMS) on the NASDAQ.

Now the question is, will someone step up to the plate and do country in LA, or will markets #1 & #2 be without Country radio?

Take the best of KBIG dance hits and oldies, Hot 92 Jamz r&b and classic hip hop and adult top 40 rhythmic hits that you'd hear or have heard in the last few years on KIIS and you've got this station.

I've already heard a number of nicely produced classic top 40 sounding promos for Dees. Best I've heard in this market in years.

At least the music isn't as cookie-cutter as Clear Channel has - having to protect your sister station. Could be trouble for 2 or 3 Clear Channel stations - especially KBIG and Hot.

Professional sounding from sign-on which I haven't said about any other station, including Jack, in this market in years.

So far, so good.

Why? It's a LOSER. And has been for 25 years.

Country could only work on a Class A in L.A..

92.7 Jill FM should switch for OC residents. Or maybe Entravision's Indie 103.1 although I don't think they'd get much of an audience out of the L.A. stick.

Maybe Saul Levine and his never ending wheel of formats on AM 1260 should consider it...

I whould look for star to flip to country

Star could never get close to what they bill now with country.

Kzla and star had almost the same 12+ ratings, but star has the people advertisers want, those with money, and kzla didn't but now will.

I was also thinking that about 92.7 -- COL Fountain Valley, stick in the Newport Beach hills above the San Juaquin Tollway Route 73. THAT is a total waste of a signal with virtually zero OC advertisers save for a few Newport Beach car dealers sponsoring their local traffic reports and/or news blurbs. 1260 as you prolly know is weak in OC and unlistenable after sunset. But you can receive K-Frog OK in the OC.

I wish we could bring back some of those threads...KDL, the station that couldn't get anything right.

I have heard a little bit of dead air on Movin'. Like the 1 PM i.d.

I heard that dead air too. Isn't about time you give their webmaster a call to update their website? BTW there's no link (so far) that I see to access any live stream of the old country format. I also remember their HD-2 originally was going to be :D :D AAA :D :D.

Jill's studios remain in Thousand Oaks. With a staff of about 10 people total. It's the biggest english language joke of a station in the L.A. area.
