KZND Rebrands As 94/7 Alternative Anchorage

I think it’s a smart move by Last Frontier Mediactive. I’ve heard songs I haven’t in a long time - Gary Jules’ cover of “Mad World”, and many others. The market doesn’t have a current-based Alternative, and I think with the proper marketing, it has the chance to really take hold. I’ve seen some carping online (mainly on their Facebook page) about how poppy the new playlist sounds but that’s the path the format has gone. It’s less guitar-based these days, for whatever reason. So yeah, they’ve been playing the top ten Alternative songs in heavy rotation, which is expected, especially with a rebranding like this.

And they haven’t abandoned ‘90s gold either - I’ve heard songs by Bush, Weezer, Soundgarden et al...so that stuff is still being played. I’ve also noticed that it seems like they’re attempting to emulate the legendary heritage Alternative KNDD (107.7 The End). Their positioner is “Alternative. Seattle.” and KZND is now “94/7 Alternative Anchorage”. KNDD also intros new music as “New Music Discovery”, which is what KZND has been doing. If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, I think they’re on the right track, emulating an almost 30 year old legendary Alternative station.

So yeah, there may be some in Anchorage bemoaning the format flip, but I welcome it. It’s an exciting change to Anchorage radio. And I can’t wait to see what’s next.

While their new branding may be loosely based on KNDD, their PD is from Portland where KNRK is branded as "94/7 Alternative Portland" - so they probably didn't lose too much sleep dreaming up that branding :)

Musically, the station is impressively on point and as you say: in line with alt stations in much larger markets. It's ultimately a good thing for radio that all music genres are represented in this competitive market.

Both KWHL and KZND should benefit from their new found musical separation.
