KZNX Daytime power

Any reason why KZNX is on low power? Or did they forget to turn on the daytime power the last few days?

I thought it switches from nighttime to daytime automatically, it probably got a light sensor and it powers up when the sensor senses sun. Maybe the sensor broke?

It is logical to think that stations power up and down by themselves (a lot do) however there are still stations that do it manually.

You can't use a light sensor to switch from day to night. Your sunrise and sunset times are written into your station license and change monthly. You have to use a timer or do it manually to stay legal.

Not to mention that, if you use a computer to determine when to power up and down, it's easier to use a timer than a sensor. Most of the programs you'd use on a computer are already built to use time, and the machine can be set to sync time every few minutes. So, you know it's accurate. Interfacing with a light sensor would be much more difficult.

I am confused I seem to get it at night clear, nothing during the day. Are they backwards?

KZNX has three power levels. Their main site in Creedmore normally pumps out 10,000 watts daytime EXCEPT that they operate on reduced power of 1,000 watts for two hours after sunrise and cut back again two hours before sunset. They're also super directional with almost no signal south of Austin (protecting the 50,000 watt coverage of KGBT down in the Valley.)

KZNX added night service with 220 watts from a site near Manor. But their night pattern actually allows more signal to the south.

My guess is that right now they're operating all daytime hours on their reduced power... maybe a problem with the 10kw transmitter?

I wonder if they are running their 10kw at night now? It sure seems that way. It use to be backwards, I can get KZNX clear in the day, at night I can't get anything.
