KZOQ FM 100.1 Missoula

Hey -- Does anybody know what year Missoula station KYLT-FM went AOR? Was there an AOR in Missoula before them? And what year did the KYLT-FM call letters changed to KZOQ? Did the station utalize a consultant like Lee Abrams? Any info on the history of this station would be helpful. I'd love to hear about any memorable on-air talent as well. I remember a guy named Rod Harsell(?) And wasn't Vern Argo was a big shot of some sort. ...and of course Bill Williams has been there forever. It seems like their power was pretty low in the earlier years - did the station get a power increase at some point, or move their tower? Again any info would be much appreciated...

You can get all that info from Vern Argo, who is still associated with the station. He started in 1965. My recollection of a lot of it is fuzzy, having not been there since the late 1960's. Rod Harsell worked there, as did his cousin Mick.

TLR...

I don't know how "memorable" I was, but I worked at 13-KYLT in 1977 using the air-name "Dave Robbins". I did 7-midnight. I left in November of 77 to move to Huntsville AL to pursue the dream of working in the big cities. Came back to Montana a few years later, using the name "Don St John", and worked in Kalispell, Bozeman, Missoula again for a short time at XT93, and then Billings. I left radio totally in the mid 90's, and am now living in the Black Hills of SD.

The jocks that were there at the time were: Fat Dad-mornings, not sure but I think it was Mark Willis aka Denny Bedard doing middays, Charlie Brown-afternoons, me 7-mid. Charlie, aka Doug Smith went on to work in Seattle as an engineer at KING. Don't remember who did overnights then. Vern Argo was the PD. I think Steve Miller was there for a short time as well. I also remember a part timer named Gary Pearson. This WAS 30 years ago, so some details have been fogged over by time.

The studios at that time were at the far end of Fairway Shopping Center at Stevens & Brooks. KYLT-FM (the Super 100) was automated "AOR" when I was there. All on reel tape. Don't remember much about it, as it was just in a side room next to the control room. Vern did most of the voicers and promos. We had to record a weather cart before our shift for the automation. Of course, sometimes we were so into our "show" we would forget to change the tapes when they ran out so there was frequent dead air. Ho well..... LOL. I think... and don't quote me on this, but at the time KYLT-FM was only 3KW, and they were on the stick on the hill north of town next to the interstate where the AM transmitter is now. The FM later moved to the top of the SKI mountain.

As for Rod, when I was there he was working at KGMY (now KGRZ), then moved up to Great Falls to work at KEIN. I was long gone by the time he came back to Missoula. I liked Rod. He really sucked at KGMY, but after a year or so at KEIN he got pretty good.

Well, it's not much, but I hope that helps.

Best Regards...

Addendum:

After thinking about this overnight, it was Peter Christian that did middays at KYLT while I was there, and stayed for many years after. He's now at KGVO, I believe. Denny Bedard must have been the one that did overnights then.

Trying to dig up memories from 30 years ago. Whew. Especially when during those times certain things were "ingested" and "inhaled" that blurred those memories and reality. :-[ Not proud of it, but it was a fact.

cheers...

I remember the daze at KYLT/KZOQ with a great deal of fondness. Like you said, that was a long time ago...I worked various shifts and remember actually playing 45 rpm plastic disks they called records. Good to chat with a former alum. --Chuck Cole (went by Charlie Horse while at KGRZ (formally KGMY...across from the old Amvets Club) anybody remember that?

Hi Charley... Not sure when you were there, but I can't place you on the air at KGMY. I was at KYLT between Jan and Nov of 1977. You were probably either before or after my stint there. The only names I remember from KGMY were Rod Harsell, Glenn Schmidt, and a couple of part timers named Ray O' Vac (like the battery) and Paul Driver. He would probably kick my ass for saying this, but Rod used the air name "Milton Rock" back then, before he moved on to Great Falls. Not sure, but I think Mike Majerus may have worked there for a bit too.

Speaking of fondness... do you remember that old Gates board at KYLT... the one that had the 2 upper/lower banks of push buttons in the middle that fed most of the audio into just the 2 left and right pots, and if I remember right, the turntables were underneath the board? Loved it. You're right though... all records. No carted music, nothing. Just cue burned 45's and LP's.

Then there was the control room right next to that big plate glass window where every weirdo and groupie could walk by and stand there staring at you for hours. Made your show a little more "personal" at times.

Of course, my fav was putting on the LP version of Inagoddadavida and running across the parking lot to that greasy burger joint to get a late snack, hoping that sucker didn't start skipping!!

Great days.

Hey Magic... yep. "Donnie St. Johnnie" here. Ya'll Flat Heads miss me up there? Like the plague or jock itch, I imagine. ::) LOL

How the heck are you? Still at Bee Broadcasting I see. Your station sounds good, last time I listened to the internet stream. Not many people there from my old days at the joint. You and Benny Jr (and Sr) are about it. Duane Barnhart at KOOL I remember from when I was in Bozo. Of course, Scotty is at the Brand X station down the road, along with a couple others from the old days at the Bee are there as well. I talked to C Bear a few years ago via email once, but I've lost contact with him now. And last I checked Barry was in Spokane (as the FNG). Ever hear from Bob Hughes? Where did he go to?

Oh... I'm in Rapid City, SD. Still married, 18 years now. No kids. Just 2 stupid retarded cats. Outa radio since 1995 or so. Last gig I was on the air at was Y93 in Billings doing swing and weekends when it was still owned by Meyer, and I was teaching at MTC. I now work in the accounting department for a regional construction company, and also do their computer/server/database administration. 7am - 4pm, M-F, no weekends, no pager, no snowmobiles to the top of a snow packed mountain in the middle of a blizzard to fix a transmitter at 2am.

I kinda miss being on the air though, but not today's radio, with computers and non-live VT shows and all. Gimme a stack of carts and/or CDs, a 4 hour live show, pick my own tunes, and I'd be like a pig in shit. But as we know, that would never happen. So I'm happy to let the good memories be just that. And I certainly have fond ones of the old and retired A-frame studio building in Whitefish. Ironic, but just the other day I was rummaging through an old box in the garage and found a couple of old aircheck cassette tapes of myself from B98 I forgot I had. Wow. Sunday afternoon summertime rock-n-roll party. I need to dub them to mp3 and burn them to a CD before the tape totally deteriorates. They're almost 20 years old.

Well... take care John. Good to hear from you. Tell Sr I said hi. Next time I'm in the 'hood I'll stop by and check out the new digs. Well, new to me anyway.

cheers...

DSJ

Don St. John,

Charlie Bear went to Spokane then to Riverside all on Christian radio & is now back in the valley on KALS!
He is using his real name "Dave Masters."

Hi, I am doing the 106.7 The Planet, in Billings, Montana, treasure hunt and looking for any resources leading me to a HOT 101.7 (old station) t-shirt or sticker, any logo item, and a Z97 (old station) logo item as well. Does anyone have any of these memoriabilias that I could possibly borrow, buy or have??? Please let me know ASAP. The contest ends Saturday, June 9th. I appreciate any help I could get. I've collected 108 items so far and these are the last two (hardest) items.!!!

I was working at KYLT when KLSS went to AOR. It was in November or December of 1973. I worked the 7 to midnight shift. Fat Dad had the morning show until 10AM. Then Vern Argo, until 2PM. Don't remember who had the 2-7PM. Larry Rousseau did the Midnight to 6AM. I had experience with AOR from a previous job so had to instruct some of the jocks how to work the system.

Sparrowhawk again. I ment to say that I was working at KYLT in 1973 when the FM KZOQ when AOR. I mistakenly said KLSS which was another AOR station that I worked at some years earlier. I was at KYLT from September 1973 to September 1976.
