KZOS-LP - 92.5 - San Marcos

When did they launch? Found this station and thought it was a pirate, until I found this. http://radio-locator.com/cgi-bin/finder?call=KZOS&x=0&y=0&sr=Y&s=C
And this: http://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=291538960715

They play a pretty good mix of music on a mono FM signal. A lot of country, some classic rock, oldies, big band, even heard Britney Spears - Hit me Baby One More Time on there. A male voice comes on every few songs or so announcing the call letters in a quick, broadcaster-like voice. Audio sounds somewhat compressed but very clean.

Over all it's not a bad station if you're in the San Marcos area and looking for veriety on your dial.

Checking their application history, it looks like they first went on the air back in 2009. Shortly afterward they had transmitter failure, had to ship it back to the manufacturer, and remained silent for some time. That was followed by loss of the tower they were using; the Lower Colorado River Authority cited "security concerns" for revoking permission for KZOS-LP to continue broadcasting from there. After locating a short tower nearby they returned to air and a license to cover the change was granted in January of 2011.

It is run by Texas State University. I pick it up when I go to San Marcos on the Bob Cat Tram.
Also along with now defunct Air 1 on 103.1. Air 1 came in better. But near the campus you can pick 92.5 real clear. You will hear spots for the University Bookstore on that station. It has been a while since I have listened to that station.

Will they need to move if 92.5 Elgin completes its move into the Austin metro?

I doupt it the way the FCC works? Look at how close KBCP and KQQK are down in Houston.

KQQK is one of those Houston rim shots licensed to Beaumont. KBCP-LP is 90 miles from the KQQK tower. San Marcos is only 30 miles from Austin's antenna farm in West Lake Hills. Parts of San Marcos are line of sight with the Austin towers. I guess it will be up to KXXS whether they complain that their class A FM is being denied listeners in San Marcos because of interference from KZOS-LP.

BTW-- KQQK's tower is 60 miles from Houston's Galleria Mall. That's roughly the distance from my house in South Austin to San Antonio's antenna farm in Elmendorf. That is a long haul. Only KISS, KSMG and KXTN make it to Austin. None of those claim to serve Austin. It's a stretch for KQQK to claim to be a Houston station.

I can barely pick up KZOS-LP right past the San Marcos City Limit signage on I-35.

They KXXS would have to keep it directional, I would suppose.

As for KQQK 107.9's COL is Beaumont, but it serves the Houston area, not all of it, but a good 50 percent of Houston's core. I can listen to it, if I were at Gessner and I-10. Even in Sharpstown.

Sorry but FCC rules do not give LPFMs protection from other classes of FM stations. It's the LPFM that would have to move.

So is this station a factor in why KRPT can't move closer to San Antonio?

I take it you're not referring to the LPFM, since that question was just answered. If you're asking about KVLR (the former KXXS) the answer is also no, not from the present location, but West Lake Hills would present a short-spaced situation. That's purely hypothetical, though, since the real problem is 2nd adjacent KROM 92.9; KRPT is about as close as they can get to San Antonio under existing rules.

Another reason Clear Channel should consider acquiring KVAR 97.7 in exchange for KRPT 92.5

Are they making money on KRPT? How's the ratings of KRPT?
I can't pick it up without being in the car from the Airport area.

Strange. You'd think that, if it were really run by Texas State, they'd make it more like their other station (KTSW). KZOS is completely automated as far as I can tell, and the only stops I've heard are those of that recorded announcer I mentioned, every few songs. No commercials that I've heard, but then again I haven't listened a whole lot.

Radio Locator says "City of San Marcos" as the owner, not Texas State. If it really is run by Texas State, I'd guess they're helping the city throw some automated programming on the signal.

Seems KZOS-LP 92.5 flipped to Oldies?

We traveled through San Marcos earlier today and I listened, sounds like all they play now is obscure sounding 60's stuff from what I can guess (I'm not an oldies expert so I could be wrong!)

But all the country, rock, and everything else seems to be gone. Judging by the few songs I've heard it's just some kind of Oldies format. Also, no imaging or breaks at all that I could tell. I didn't even hear a legal ID at 3:00, perhaps they've got it mid-hour if they even have one at all.

I must say I liked it a little better the old way, but all I can do is talk about it.

IIRC-- The station is setup to broadcast emergency information for the City of San Marcos since the stations licensed to San Marcos are programmed from out of town and staffing of KTSW is subject to the school calendar. I imagine it's just a night light until it is needed.

So it is kind of like "For Airport Traffic Information, Tune to AM 1610" type set up.

I went through San Marcos and was able to tune in to KZOS for a few minutes. Seems they still play just a random variety of music as I said in the first post in this thread.

But they're still on the air and 92.5 K-Love (KVLR) in Austin seemed to get stronger, it overpowered KZOS in some places when I don't recall that last time I went through the area. If KVLR did get their new signal up and running, expect to say goodbye to KZOS soon. :(

KVLR's move is complete, and they filed for a license to cover a few days ago. As for the future of KZOS, it seems that there's nothing in the works for a frequency change. Who knows, maybe the two can coexist and any localized interference just isn't a big deal to the San Marcos city government folks.

Stay tuned to see if KZOS-LP voluntary or involuntary leaves the frequency. Personally I can't see
both of these stations coexisting on 92.5. Just a guess, but if KVLR dose not care then KZOS-LP
will likely be able to stay on the channel.

What kind of programming is on KZOS-LP? Is most of it live and local?

From what I've heard KZOS-LP plays a wide variety of country, some oldies, some newer stuff like older Britney Spears, etc. Mostly it's just a softer variety of different kinds of music, no hard rock or hip-hop or anything. What I've heard is all automated.
