KZPS Flip - whats the latest?

It appears KZPS will be known as "BUMSTEER 92" Country with some Captain and Tenille,Barry Manilow,Paul Anka, Melissa Manchester type Lite favorites. They will be commercial free on Monday. It appears they be Tossing a Bone

This will help them in the May Mating Trend with Herefords2-14, and Santa Gertrudis 2-9,Longhorns might be a distinct possibility in the 2-12 year range plus Jerseys

Hold on!.... First, All Access was reporting Oldies. Now they just added on a teaser: "Or.... will it be something smoother?" Hmmm......

Even though it looks like I might end up eating some crow from my previous comment, I am still going to be thoroughly shocked if the wheel really does land on Smooth Jazz. I just don't think it makes much long term sense.

When was the last time anyone launched a high-profile Smooth Jazz station in a major market?

November 17th...Greater Media launched smooth jazz WJJZ 97.5 in Philadelphia, bringing back the calls and format from the former WJJZ 106.1 there. Clear Channel dumped the smooth jazz format on 106.1 there 8/10/2006 and turned it into a rhythmic AC/Whoopi mornings outlet. GM had just picked up the 97.5 signal, which was a classic rock format competing with its existing classic rock WMGK there. The 97.5 facility, originally licensed to Trenton, is moving directly into the Philly market shortly.

Otherwise, smooth jazz does seem to be on the decline since the format's audience is aging to the point it's not as attractive to advertisers as its once was. Though CC dumped WJJZ, it still has kept smooth jazz on other major market signals (WNUA Chicago, KKSF San Francisco, KYOT Phoenix).

Here is what I predict....

Smooth Jazz is not happening.

KLUV looks envious, but the demos are aging just like SJ above.

Both Country station are at all time lows and need a huge wakeup call...I know because I used to LOVE Country, and to demonstrate this my Favorite station right now is Casa 106.7 and I'm white...go figure.

Look for a major shuffle and relauch combo too. What is they moved KZPS up to 97.1 and relauched and dumped Spanish and converted 92.5 to Country? Think about that scenario.

Won't happen. DFW has too many country signals. Maybe Oldies, maybe this new format of the month Jones networks is pushing; JAYNE-FM for 25-44 Women.

OUCH! This one hurts, it's like losing a child. KZPS was a highlight in my career, it was running on all 8 when I was there (middays and APD '99 - 03) and living in NORTH Texas is an experience everyone should have in their life . John Larson had that thing well tuned. #1 25-54 more often than not up until the morning show change in Summer 2001. I was blessed to be #1 in the demo 5 of 6 books in my first couple of years there. Since I left, I've watched the battle with The Bone, and rooted for my alma mater. I was delighted to see Bo & Jim return. And of course JD!! This is not a Bone victory, but a CC business decision that makes sense. It's the listeners that lose here. It will be interesting to see if 93.3 can get them to come along given the limitations of the signal...unless that has changed since I left. I'm sure that Pat & Duane worked their asses off to keep this from happening, but evolutiom can sometimes be a runaway train.

Hi DFW!

Are they going to keep Bo & Jim when the change takes place??

Re: KZPS Flip - Lone Star Rock?

Apparently it will be called Lone star Rock. And the big change is the way they are going to sell it... No or very few 30/60's. It is supposed to be a sonsorship type of sell with product placements along with a lot of 5's, 10's and 15's

I hope that's the case... Bo & Jim would fit in well with that format.

How about D/FW's first full signal Urban AC?

Wasn't the old KRBV (v100) full-signaled until the tower collapse? I'd say Urban AC would have a shot on 92.5 if CC/Premiere's Steve Harvey were available; he's currently on KRNB, so fat chance for UAC. Most CC Urban AC's heavily rely on syndicated content; none of which is available outside of Premiere's horrid "Keith Sweat Hotel" night show. CC uses Reach Media/Radio One's Tom Joyner for mornings in a few markets (Joyner handles mornings on Radio One's KSOC, which also airs ABC's Michael Baisden Show; another program that CC clears in several markets).

CC launching a fully-staffed, live-and-local Urban AC in the Metroplex?

Not. Gonna. Happen.

:(

I don't think either, my idea is either "Lone Star Radio" on KZPS or oldies.

The CCU Dallas staff is already out pitching Lone Star Rock to clients.

"Hoof and Mouth" 92 or better yet "Madcow92""We haven't a clue to what we are doing".

DANG HOW COULD I FORGET ABOUT THE V...ESPECIALLY SINCE I WORKED THERE.....YOU COULD DO A URBAN AC STATION WITH JUST LOCAL PERSONALITIES. AT LEAST YOU WOULD BEAT JOYNER EVERY BOOK

CC is not going to spend money to locally staff an Urban AC. Wish I had better news.

I fear you're right, but it is a shame, because I think they could do very well with it. As I pointed out earlier, they do very well with it in Chicago at WVAZ, and all their talent is local (except Joyner). And, who says you need a syndicated morning show like Harvey or Joyner?! I'm sure you could do well with a live show, it works for Skip Murphy on K104.

Lone Star Rock or Lone Star Radio just doesn't sound like it's going to fly.

Lone Star Radio or Lone Star Rock?

The sales pitch is "Lone Star Rock."

... which of course could be a working name... the format is pretty much confirmed as a blend of 60% classic rock/southern rock and 40% country. It should be on the air Monday or Tuesday.
