KZZO R.I.P.?

Unfortunately, after reading all the comments it would seem nobody here is getting the reason. The view is all singular. Strictly from a programming and jock point of view, absolutely it's the worst idea for that stick. There would have been so many better format choices and revenue opportunities. Now with that being said, from a corporate radio business stand point in the PPM world, this is a brilliant move on CBS radio part!

In the PPM world TSL is not a factor and total gross impressions are the driving force behind the numbers. In a market like Sacramento, numbers tend to stagnate and even more so in PPM. By creating another format for the station or becoming a single competitor to another station, you'll only see marginal shifts in numbers. Mostly in the two competing stations. KNCI and KNTY are perfect examples of this. However, by doing what CBS has done and with a sizable marketing blitz you stir the entire pot, and change overall listening patterns with the CHR, AC and classic hit formats. Plus, with the change KZZO will undoubtedly see sampling go up which effects overall PPM numbers. A station like KSFM may see some shifts in audience number, but the format is isolated for the most part, since most people in the market consider it a hip-hop station and not close enough to a mainstream CHR or AC to cause any real degeneration of it numbers. So CBS was not worrying about cannibalizing itself in that regard.

With this move I would expect some new excitement in the market, strictly from a new CHR battle one that hasn't occurred since the KSFM, KWOD and KROY days. Granted It won't be like that again, but I still suspect that over the next month or so you'll see is some new positioning from all involved in the battle to retain audience share and even a little capitol being spent to defend against the competition. These kind of battles are good for the audience and over the long term can, if done right, be good for the radio market as well. This will cause some movement in PPM and as things heat up, could create a couple of jobs for some local talent in Sac. It's too soon to tell, but ultimately this was a wise move on CBS radio's part.

So why is this different from the "Zone" ???? I hardly cant tell the difference. They are fooling themselves if they think a slogan name change will change the ratings.

Isn't 100.5 still for sale? Isn't CBS still trying to get out of Sacramento? What happened with all that jazz?

The cluster is still for sale. KZZO reduces its overhead by killing the airstaff, making it more attractive. Redesigning a logo doesn't cost much, and any money they bother to throw into promoting it is just good money after bad. They're as likely to dent KSFM as they are KDND, so it's largely a wash. They wasted a good amount of money promoting the Zone as it was over the past few years, too.

I understand the "PPM wisdom," but I would bet that even if there were 10 Top 40s in the market, given the half-assed nature of the operators in Sacramento, KDND would still win, and rather easily. They have a very good airstaff, an excellent programmer, terrific imaging and promotions, and that's why they win. It's why they will continue to win against these understaffed, non-local pretenders.

It's also why KRXQ is kicking ass, although a locally programmed rock with an alt lean would take 40% of the 6+ outside of mornings in 3 months. Fox is a smart dude, but has never had competition in the market outside of KWOD, and he had a very heavy thumb on that til the end.

I remember during the "Diary" days all the experts would spout off their ideas as to how best to program the ARB GAME. Now comes PPM and here comes more horseshit. ::)

Yes cbs wants out but no one (yet) is willing to pony up the price they want. It will be years before a sale comes about.

Some people are just never happy. Tons of bitching on here when a company doesn't spend money on it's stations, and by no big surpirse, tons of bitching when a company invests a lot of money to reposition is's station. Doesn't matter the station or company, so people just feel the need to bitch...constantly. Sounds like more than anything it's just a bunch of people who got the short end of the stick in an tough industry and have nothing better to do with their time then complain. Everyone seems to be an expert and know best. Here's a big *YAWN* to that.

Does that include YOU?

Well, seeing as how I'm not on here commenting on every post about how a comapny sucks for this reason and that, I'm not sure how one could infer that it includes me.

I am not sure why a consultant would suggest such a dumb slogan. "Today's Hits without all the Rap" YIKES...sounds so eighties. I dont know why consultants seem to think they need to tell the listeners over and over what it is they are hearing. I think its sort of obvious they dont play any rap.

It reminds me of KOIT in San Francisco, they spend an awful lot of time telling you how much they don't talk. If you dont talk that much..then shut up. :)

96.3 WDVD in Detroit currently uses that lame slogan, and surprisingly it's doing well in that market.

it should be today's worst music without the rap, how could Rob Thomas, Nickelback, Daughtry and John Mayer be best music

WDVD in Detroit has used that for years, including "Here's another hit you won't hear on the rap channel" sweepers, a slam against Channel 955 which is very Rhythmic-heavy for a CHR. That's why it works for them. They've even finished #1 6+ a few times.

Not saying it's a good move in Sacto, Detroit is a different market and it makes sense there.

Is NOW 100.5 still carrying Loveline?
No. CBS moved Loveline to its AM sister station, Sports 1140 KHTK. Same time slot.

That's surprising.
