L.A. Metro Radio Ratings - July 2022

Covering the period from Thu. 6/23/2022 through Wed. 7/20/2022.

Age 6+ overall: https://radioinsight.com/ratings/los-angeles/

KOST drops 6.0-5.4 while KLVE rises 4.4-4.9, KUSC rises 1.5-2.0
while KROQ rises 1.8-2.3. As Chuck Barris would say on The Gong Show:
"There is hope! But then again, there is rickets and scurvy!"

Demo rankings for the Top 5 (or so) in 25-54, 18-34 + 18-49 (scroll down to see L.A.):

25-54: KBIG, KLVE, KRTH
18-34: KRRL, KIIS, KYSR
18-49: KLVE, KRRL, KBIG

*************************

Keep in mind July (and the next survey for August) feature much vacation time by both radio hosts and listeners,
disrupting normal listening patterns. Thus, these surveys are not taken quite as seriously as others.

All those changes are statistical wobbles. They are entirely within the margin of error.

Thumbs up for the Chuck Barris pull!

Looks like getting rid of Mike Kaplan and reinstalling Kevin weatherly was a good thing. My question to David or whoever else can answer...Since Kroq was always a top five biller even with there lower numbers why was everyone freaking out?

I think the station sounds better and love there 90s weekends they do occasionally.

Must be interesting for Lisa and Kevin personally for Lisa current pd at alt 98.7 use to work under Kevin at Kroq now they(Lisa and Kevin) are direct competitors.

... because you can only sell tradition for a short time. At some point, advertisers realize that a station is not coming back and they find other media.

And it takes 4 to 6 books at the least to re-convince advertisers that "you are back".

Happens all the time.

Going from 1.4 to 1.8 to 2.3 is not merely a "statistical wobble."
Yeah that’s a sign of a short-term turnaround. The question is whether it sticks. I think David is right about it needing a 4-6 book upswing to know for sure. This has only been two books, and only one above the 2.0 mark.

It’s a promising sign but not a clear, defined one.

But KROQ has had bad ratings for years. Really, I think since 98.7 flipped, the station has suffered. But wasn’t it always Top 10 in L.A. and Top 50 in the nation?

Since John Ivey left KIIS-FM, the station has added a lot more pop music (Leah Kate, OneRepublic, Sam Smith, Dove Cameron) that he would have not played on the station. It does not look like that strategy has helped KIIS. As a matter of fact, AMP Radio signed off the air and KIIS has it's lowest shares month after month P 18-34 and P 25-54.

While a wider playlist is always suggested for top 40 radio, there are some markets where that strategy is just not true. Furthermore if you do that, expect a while of lower ratings before it turns around (if it ever does). Gen Z have way more choices today.

Is Power 106 really doing that badly, given that they are 25th in the beauty contest ratings? And their arch-rival KRRL is increasing at the same time?

On the flipside, KIIS can't go very Rhythmic like 15 years ago, given that KIIS is a sister station to KRRL.
