L.A. PPM RATINGS WRAP-UP & ANALYSIS - 8/21 to 9/17/2008

I think it is fabulous that KUSC is doing so well with the PPM! Hooray for the arts/classical!

Yeah, I noticed that too and was surprised. I could imagine why KUSC has done well, especially ever since KKGO went country. However, I would have guessed KCRW to be the highest rated non-com news/talk/variety.

On a related note, why are non-com ratings now published with PPM when they used to be excluded? I'm glad that they are as I find them interesting. Maybe companies that sponsor non-com programming want to know what kind of audience they were reaching just like regular advertisers do on commercial radio?

The Arbitron electronic ratings data always included non-commercial stations, but the trend reports released to the press did not include them.

Radio guys only care about you if they can make money off you.

That is correct for the most part. Commercial radio can deliver its product for free only if each station can attract listeners in an age group that is desirable to advertisers. Otherwise, the station either fails and is sold to someone who thinks they can do better or the station ends up doing paid religion or some very niche format.

Not true. In the "real world" any business that can't pay its bills fails. So the success of any station depends on its ability to get listeners in the ages between 18 and 54.

In truth, the PPM incentives are not $10. They are more in the range of hundreds of dollars a year for PPM households, plus gift cards and other incentives.

The additonal payments of $5 to $10 were for one week of participation in the diary survey, which has not been done in LA for 5 months now.

Hey, with the weak economy maybe more people will want to wear PPMs!! LOL.)

They get their overall 6+ quotas already.
 
Well apparently there is one household with several children whose parents insist on KUSC being on all day.
David correct me if I'm wrong but KUSC seems to have done very well with people 6-11 years old.

That's a bizarre demo that I have never really looked at. Much of the listening is, of course, shadowing what an adult has on.

Your analysis is correct... it's the parents! (Or very precocious kids...)
 
Must be Asian parents. We MAKE our kids listen to classical!! Trust me, I know these things...
Guess which country is spawning all the great superstars of the classical world nowadays?? (hint, NOT the USA)
And KUSC is strong in Pasadena, Monterey Park, all areas which are heavily asian!

My kids are exposed frequently to KUSC and KKJZ, and hardly ever to KDIS (the station that supposedly is targeting them). I'd expose them to a station playing Standards too, but KGIL does not come in well, and regardless, they program standards mostly only on Sunday during hours in which the 6 to 12 set would be awake.

Lastly, regarding KDIS - they seem to be targeting the tweens and teens, which to my ear does not provide programming that is desired by the 6 to 12 set. Might be nice if Radio Disney had specific hours oriented toward the very young.

If you don't believe Arbitron...then why do you believe the 12+?
And who else "in the real world" looks at those numbers?

I remember they used to?? My kids are now 10 and 13 and they believe themselves to be way to old and mature for KDIS, but I remember driving around in the car with them during mid mornings when KDIS first started and hearing songs and stories geared to the 3 to 6 year olds. Now, what do they want? you guessed it, Ryan Seacrest (GEEZ, HELP ME!!!)

Yup, my now 13 year old son listened to KDIS when he was 7-10 years old. For the last few years, it's been all KIIS, including Ryan Seacrest in the morning. I forget when they did it but it sure took a lot of guts to replace Rick Dees with Ryan but that worked out well for KIIS.
 
Ditto on the small fry wanting KDIS but now wanting another station. They are 11 and 13 and sneer at the disney station now. But when they were 6, I had to fight with them about constantly wanting all things Disney. But I have a deal with them now. They have to listen to mom's classical choice in the mornings and then they get to listen to whatever they want in the afternoons. Which is 987 mostly

So are you telling us that the station you are on isn't even the first or second choice among the family at home?
 
I take the fifth on that one, but the station that I am on, yes it's pre-set so even my kid (13) listens to it...once in a while. She will listen to the new tunes. She'll put up with the older stuff only because mom insists on it. The younger one (11) tells me that the station is "totally cool" mom! So, one out of two ain't bad. Yes, we are fickle listeners, and rotate between the three stations, plus KFWB and KFI because I am and always will be, a news junkie too. I DO have a degree in journalism and maybe I WILL use it, damn it, one day...
